Viewtiful Joe is an action game released by Capcom in 2003 for the Nintendo GameCube (later also for the PlayStation 2). Further successors appeared directly on at least two systems with the exception of the Nintendo DS game Viewtiful Joe - Double Trouble .
action
Joe, the main character in the game, is a common movie buff until his girlfriend Sylvia is whisked into a popular Captain Blue movie (a fictional superhero within the fictional story) while going to the cinema .
Joe follows Sylvia to get her out and becomes "Viewtiful Joe" in the film , a superhero who is initially tutored by Captain Blue . As the game progresses, it turns out that the movie's super villains are set to take on the real world. Joe sets out to prevent this. The other representatives of this young video game series also deal with adventures in a film world.
Technically influenced by the movie Last Action Hero , its style is a mixture of anime / manga and typical Japanese superhero series (compare Joe's costume with the Power Rangers, for example ). Certain films are mostly only parodied very indirectly and not superficially, but rather general laws of the film, its plot and its internal logic. In addition, video game clichés are strongly emphasized ("free the girl", "one against all", " story twists " etc.)
Gameplay
The game stood out due to the use of the rare Cel Shading style and its unusual features (since Joe is in a film he can use slow motion , time lapse and zoom ) as well as a humor unusual for a video game , but also due to its high level of difficulty. This is mainly due to the fact that the Viewtiful Joe games require practice, experience and intuition. To compensate for this, the game offers a very long-term learning curve .
