Planetside was an online MMOFPS computer game set in a military science fiction scenario.

Game content and description

The player can choose one of the three factions New Conglomerate , Terran Republic or Vanu Sovereignty and intervene in the battle for the 4 continents of the fictional world Auraxis . Each of these continents has several factories / bases and watchtowers. These can each be conquered by the three factions and, in addition to the possibility of respawning after virtual death, also offer additional bonuses. The continents are connected by so-called warp gates and can thus be traveled. Furthermore, a shuttle flight ( called HART ) to the continents can be undertaken from the base station of each faction . This enables battle zones to be reached from anywhere within a few minutes.

Similar to a role-playing game, the character can be expanded and over time, through the acquisition of experience, levels can be increased ( Battle Ranks and Command Ranks ) and thus learn additional skills. In addition to all kinds of weapons and armor, the player can also use various aircraft and vehicles, with the three factions differing significantly in appearance and selection.

Remarkably, Planetside was the first first person shooter in which several hundred players could fight each other in one area, and thus offered a completely different gaming experience than the usual fights in other games with around a dozen fighters.

Development history

Planetside was originally developed by Verant Interactive ( aka EverQuest ) in their offices in San Diego and St. Louis. First there was a cooperation with Sony Online Entertainment , later a complete takeover by SOE. Ubisoft was responsible for distribution in Europe .

Almost six months after the release of Planetside, the expansion Core Combat was added, which brought new weapons, vehicles and battles in underground caves. This expansion was later completely integrated into the main program and activated for all players at no additional cost. In the meantime there is also a German version called Planetside Invasion , distributed by Koch Media Deutschland GmbH (see below).

On January 24, 2014, Sony Online Entertainment announced that PlanetSide would be free-to-play in April 2014 . On April 29, 2014, it was converted to the free-to-play version.

After a two-week announcement phase, the server was switched off by the operator on July 1, 2016.
