Massively multiplayer online first-person shooter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Massively Multiplayer Online First-Person Shooter ( MMOFPS ), also known as Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game / First-Person Shooter ( MMORPG / FPS ), is a genre of massively multiplayer online games and a mixture of MMORPG and first-person shooter . The term Extreme Online Role-Playing Game ( XORG ) was also coined recently .

In contrast to normal MMORPGs, in these games, as in first-person shooters, the main thing is to aim at your opponent with the mouse and to fire each shot automatically. The fan base of such games often differs significantly from the hunting and collecting enthusiasts of ordinary MMORPGs; but mostly only because most MMOFPS do not offer any expanded, if at all available, opportunities to act out the collecting instinct, but rather act as pure battlefield servers, such as PlanetSide .

Conceptualization

The term "XORG" was first used by Smiling Gator Productions to describe their development Twilight War: After the Fall , which was, however, canceled for financial reasons. The term has since established itself widely. In the meantime, Twilight War has even found a new financier and production continues.

control

Since aiming and hitting (aiming) the opponent and the objects to be used are very important, MMOFPS are mostly controlled with a mouse or trackball and keyboard . A few can also be controlled with joysticks or gamepads .

Since most MMOFPS, due to their role-playing elements, require the control of inventory and character statistics and the operation of virtual computer terminals, the HUDs can usually be operated in two modes. In the first mode, you can use the mouse to look around, shoot or interact with objects in the game world. In the second mode, various windows can be opened using the mouse pointer in order to obtain information and / or to carry out character-related actions. You can switch between these modes using a previously assigned button on one of the control units.
