Jumpgate

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jumpgate (English for jump gate according to the wormhole theory ; long title officially Jumpgate - The Reconstruction Initiative ) was a space MMORPG from 2001 to 2012 with a combination of economic and goods circulation system, flight simulator and battles like in its predecessors Elite , Frontier and Wing Commander Privateer with the main difference that it was not played locally but in a persistent online world .

Game content

The basic principle of the game was the passing of so-called. Jump Gates (jumpgates to enter a wormhole ) to travel through the banded sectors universe and conduct research to fight, to escort, to act, to produce or to mine. The player had the perspective of the pilot in the cockpit of a (upgradeable / convertible or exchangeable) spaceship, which he controlled and operated himself. In most sectors there were fixed controllable space stations from the game, later the player could also purchase his own station and place it anywhere. The game was thus a space flight simulation with a complex economic simulation including goods production and cycle.

history

Jumpgate has been developed by NetDevil since 1999 and published in 2001 in the USA by 3DO (in English) and in Europe by Mightygames and Planetactive (now OgilvyOne) in English and German.

The contract between NetDevil and 3DO in the USA ended just months after sales began. NetDevil then won the Themis Group for technical support and in-game events in the USA, which, however, stopped working on December 31, 2006. Since January 1, 2007, the developer NetDevil provided independent support for Jumpgate.

In March 2009 NetDevil was integrated into the MMO group Gazillion , which operated Jumpgate until 2012, but soon dismissed most of the former NetDevil development team. On September 25, 2011 Jumpgate celebrated its 10th anniversary since it was first published and was shut down a little later by Gazillion on April 30, 2012.

European version

The German publisher Mightygames released a European version of Jumpgate in 2001 and supported their servers until June 1, 2005. When Mightygames stopped working, NetDevil and the Mightygames Gamemasters transferred all European accounts to the US server, which has since been used by Worldwide Server ( WWS) was called.

Sequels

Jumpgate evolution

A planned follow-up game Jumpgate: Evolution was in development by the developer NetDevil since 2006 until its dissolution in 2011 and was originally supposed to appear in 2009 by the publisher Codemasters in cooperation with Gazillion Entertainment. In June 2010, however, a well-known developer ( nickname : GM_Istvan ) was withdrawn from the project by Gazillion and commissioned with the further development of the actually discontinued Jumpgate Classic , for which the first patch in 3 years actually appeared days later. On the other hand, the open beta test for Jumpgate: Evolution, announced in 2008, never took place and, according to a GameStar report with reference to the publisher's US online media, sued the manufacturer for gross delays in deadlines amounting to millions. According to information from Jumpgate Station , there have been mass layoffs at NetDevil. Jumpgate Evolution is no longer promoted or mentioned by Gazillion.

Squad Wars

In 2012, game developers from the former Jumpgate and Jumpgate Evolution development teams came together to form the production company END Games Entertainment and started a Kickstarter project to finance a free-to-play space combat MMO called Squad Wars . The attempt failed, however, and the target of $ 250,000 was not reached. The progress is unclear, all END Games Entertainment websites have been inactive since the end of 2012.
