Infinity on High is the third studio album of American alternative rock - band Fall Out Boy . It was released in the US on February 6, 2007 on Island Records (a sub-label of the Universal Music Group ). With over 260,000 units sold in the first week alone and number one on the album charts in the US and New Zealand, it is commercially the band's most successful album to date.

Origin and admission

The first work on the new album began in late 2005 during the tour of the previous album From Under the Cork Tree , when Stump and Wentz began to write new songs. According to the band, the aim was to start recording in the summer of 2006 in order to release the album as soon as possible after From Under the Cork Tree . Therefore, the band wanted to start recording earlier, but the record label forbade this due to the upcoming concerts. As with the previous albums, Pete Wentz was mainly responsible for the lyrics and Patrick Stump for the music. By November 2005, the band had already written nine ready-to-record songs. During the writing process, the band also worked on smaller side projects. So they controlled a cover version of What's This? for the revised 3D version of the film Nightmare Before Christmas and created a remix of their piece Of All the Gin Joints in All the World for the film Snakes on a Plane .

Meanwhile, the band started looking for a producer. Neal Avron, who produced the previous album, was also used as a producer for Infinity on High . Originally 14 songs were recorded with him, eleven of which made it onto the album. The band also stated that they would like to work with the musician Babyface . Babyface then agreed to record two songs with Fall Out Boy, which were released as I'm Like a Lawyer with the Way I'm Always Trying to Get You Off (Me + You) and Thnks for th Mmrs . The song Don't You Know Who I Think I Am? was co-produced by Butch Walker and singer Patrick Stump.

Six weeks before the actual recording began, the band began recording preparations in Chicago , which was led by Neal Avron. In addition to the last steps in the writing process, the first raw recordings were also made. The actual recordings took place between July and October 2006. Most of the recordings took place in Pass Studios in Los Angeles , but the songs produced by Babyface were recorded in Brandon's Way Recordings. Also Don't You Know Who I Think I Am? , which was produced by Butch Walker and Patrick Stump, comes from Chung King Studios in New York City .

After the finished recordings, the band wanted to bring an unexpected guest musician to the album. It was finally decided on the then president of the record label, the rapper Jay-Z . He was on tour in Australia at the time, so he recorded his part, the intro and the outro of the song Thriller , in Australia. The rapper Kanye West contributed a remix to This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race , but this could no longer be released on the album and was only released in July 2007.

Promotion and publication

The first song, This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race, was introduced to the public when the band played it at the American Music Awards on November 21, 2006 . The radio began broadcasting the same evening. Shortly before the release date, the band played 15 gigs in the US on the Friends or Enemies Tour along with New Found Glory , The Early November , Permanent Me and Lifetime .

Two weeks before the scheduled release date the album was inadvertently on the Internet published . As a result, the band released a live EP on the internet on the album's release date, which was recorded during a performance in London , as there was too much speculation in advance about bringing the release date forward.

The album itself was released in the USA on February 6, 2007, and about a month later in German-speaking countries.

On the day it was released, Fall Out Boy gave three free concerts in three different US cities. In the morning they played a concert in Times Square in New York City, at noon there was a performance in their hometown of Chicago . The last gig was done in Los Angeles in the evening. The band then went on a world tour, starting with engagements on the “Honda Civic Tour” and the “Young Wild Things Tour”.

Texts

As usual with the band, bassist Pete Wentz wrote most of the lyrics.

Thriller is a review of the previous year from the perspective of the band. The therapy after Wentz's suicide attempt, which he committed in 2006 with the sedative Ativan , is also addressed. While rapper Jay-Z speaks the intro, Stump and Wentz quietly read negative reviews of the previous albums in the background.

The second song on the album, "The Take Over, the Breaks Over" , also relates to the band itself. The song is about being famous and the competition between celebrities. A similar topic is discussed in Golden . The title refers to a gold record . With the song, the band wants to express the negative effects that success can have on a band's musical style. Also Don't You Know Who I Think I Am? addresses society's expectations of celebrities and criticizes the media's attitude towards celebrities.

This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race also deals with the topic of sudden fame and the circumstances that go with it, such as the exaggerated adoration of stars. Wentz also told Rolling Stone that the song expressed his frustration with the growing emo scene.

The fourth track on the album, I'm Like a Lawyer with the Way I'm Always Trying to Get You Off (Me & You) , is about a couple whose love is doomed to fail. You must find that there is a lack of love in your relationship. The (After) Life of the Party is about unrequited love . The Carpal Tunnel of Love is intended to depict a love song from a different perspective. Also in Bang the Doldrums it comes to love. Bassis Pete Wentz says about the song: "In a way it is about a situation in which you are friends with someone, although you actually know that it shouldn't be."

In Hum Hallelujah , Pete Wentz tells about his failed suicide attempt in 2005. The "Hallelujah" was adapted from the song Hallelujah by the Canadian singer Leonard Cohen . According to Wentz, a version of singer Jeff Buckley was on the radio when he was trying to kill himself.

Thnks fr th Mmrs is about how people can take advantage of one another. Bassist Wentz told Kerrang magazine that some people are still in a relationship without making love.

The photo of the record cover comes from the artist Pamela Littky, who was already responsible for the cover of From Under the Cork Tree and who also took the photos for the later Fall Out Boys albums. Todd Fjelsted was in charge of the set, who also works as a stage designer for the band's live performances. Chuck Anderson was responsible for photo editing.

The cover shows a winged sheep standing in a bedroom. The walls consist of a starry sky, and a door can be seen on the back wall that leads into a dressing room. To the right of the door are red cloths stretched out, behind it are pumpkins and a raven. On the left side of the picture behind the sheep is a bed with a cuckoo clock hanging above it . Some critics associated the cover with the fairy tale Peter's journey to the moon . The booklet shows photos of the band members in the style of tarot cards .

Videos

A music video was shot for each of the single releases from the album, so there are five videos.

Alan Ferguson directed the video for This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race . The video starts at the end of the Dance, Dance video . While Fall Out Boy are walking off the stage, you can see that most of the audience are just cardboard displays. The video shows many stereotypical scenes from a celebrity's life, such as dealing with paparazzi . After the show, the band can be seen at a recording studio with a hip-hop producer, which alludes to the collaboration on the song One & Only by Timbaland is. This shot ends in conflict when Joe Trohman accidentally destroys a bottle of liquor. Then Fall Out Boy is shown having a wild party in a hotel room that ends with Wentz falling out the window. This scene is interrupted by two more scenes. The first shows a photo shoot with Pete Wentz, during which Pete Wentz the photographer takes nude photos of Wentz with a cell phone, which can later be seen on the Internet. This is a nod to the fact that nude pictures of Wentz actually appeared, which were stolen from his cell phone. The second interruption shows the group at a party that is reminiscent of the Playboy Mansion . Next you can see his funeral, at which Stump and a gospel choir ask the mourners to sing. While Trohman is playing a guitar solo on Wentz's grave, the grave opens and Wentz comes out alive. Numerous characters from old videos of the band can be seen during the funeral. Then Wentz is seen waking up and it turns out that the story was just a dream. Meanwhile, Andy Hurley discovers that they are late for a gig that they will go to shortly afterwards. At the end you see the band standing on stage and playing the song.

The video for The Carpal Tunnel of Love is a cartoon with the characters and the typical style of the series Happy Tree Friends . Fall Out Boy can also be seen briefly in the video, they appear in the form of bears in a café and, like almost all characters, die in the course of the video.

Thnks for th Mmmrs was also directed by Alan Ferguson. In the opening scene you can see Patrick Stump asking if the video shoot in this form is a good idea, to which Pete Wentz replies that the crew consists of visionaries. Shortly after the band started playing, they were interrupted by the roar of monkeys. Then you can see that apart from Fall Out Boy only monkeys are present and take over all functions on the set. During the course of the video, Andy Hurley is replaced by a monkey in the drums and thrown out of the studio. Pete Wentz also wants to leave the set after the director interferes in his kissing scene, but can be persuaded to stay by a kiss from the actress. By the end of the video, Pete Wentz had had enough of the monkeys, didn't stick to the choreography and destroyed the stage set.

Alan Ferguson also directs the video for "The Take Over, the Breaks Over" . The video is told from the point of view of Pete Wentz Hund. At first you see Pete Wentz lying on a sofa with his dog Hemingway while the camera goes into the dog's mind and a few older Fall Out Boy songs are played. Then you see the band playing in an empty room while strange things happen, all of which have something to do with dogs. For example, it rains bones, mailmen and women dressed as cats start dancing and Patrick Stump transforms into a cat's head or a piece of meat. Meanwhile, the dog's reactions are shown again and again. During the guitar solo, an angry mob appears and berates the musicians for the change in style. But the dog manages to calm the mind and the mob begins to dance to the music. The song ends abruptly and you can see Wentz's dog jumping up and running out of the picture. The video itself is in black and white.

The last video was I'm Like a Lawyer with the Way I'm Always Trying to Get You Off (Me & You) . Again, Alan Ferguson directed. The video was shot with relatively inexpensive cameras, and the money saved went to an aid project in Uganda . The video is about two Ugandan children in love with each other who work hard to pay school fees. In the course of the video the village is attacked and the boy disappears without a trace. The boy is taken prisoner while the girl is lonely. Finally he manages to escape and the two are reunited. In between you can see the band making music in a field in Uganda, and the residents are shown doing their everyday activities. During the middle part there is no music and at the end of the video there is a written notice that thousands of child soldiers have never returned from the civil war in northern Uganda. Reference is also made to the website of an aid organization that helps victims of this war.

Reviews

Most of the critics' reviews were positive to mixed. At Metacritic , the album received an average rating of 75% from 23 professional reviews. So it was given the rating "generally favorable" (dt. Basically positive ).

The album received great praise from the US entertainment magazine Entertainment Weekly . Critic Jody Rosen writes in the online edition that the pale emo boys from Fall Out Boy have shown with this album that they are a good soul band. She was particularly fond of the swing influence, but she generally enjoys the band's musical development. It awards the American school grade A-, which corresponds to a German 1-.

Corey Apar from Allmusic also rated the album rather positively and gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars. Above all, she praises Patrick Stump's variety and vocal use as well as the drummer Andy Hurley. All in all, she says about the album that although the album is fun to listen to, Fall Out Boy has lost its unique style somewhat due to the fact that they want to appeal to a wide audience.

whiskey-soda.de expresses itself similarly to the album. Critic Tim Lindemann sees a nice good mood maker in this album, which could produce some summer hits. On the other hand, the adaptation to the chart suitability would take away the corners and edges of the album, which makes it sound like Avril Lavigne or James Blunt at times. The songwriting and the versatility of the group receive special praise, but the production is criticized because of the adjustments. As an overall grade, Infinity on High by Lindemann has a school grade of 2.

Albert Ranner from cdstarts.de is somewhat more reserved . The album gets six out of ten points and Ranner writes that it was artificially inflated, which makes the album worse. Like several other critics, Ranner compares Fall Out Boy to the band Maroon 5 . All in all, Ranner sums up that Infinity on High, thanks to a few passable pieces and a good production, is slightly above average, but has little chance of topping the charts in Germany due to the low willingness to experiment.

Sven Cadario from Plattentests.de is of the same opinion regarding the evaluation. Like many other critics, he thinks that the production and arrangement are very good, similar to the previous album From Under the Cork Tree . On the other hand, he thinks that From Under the Cork Tree is better in terms of hit density. The overall rating of the album by Cadario was 6 out of 10 points.

Also Laut.de is more economical in the criticism with praise. Critic Benjamin Buntzel is of the opinion that you can already tell the style of the album from the record cover. This is "strikingly sterile, oversubscribed, consistently trendy" . He also complains that too many songs are structured according to the same scheme. Overall, he writes about the album that listening to it does not arouse emotions and that the record has been marketed down to the last detail, but that you can still listen to it well. He gives 3 out of 5 stars as a grade.
