Yandex Zen ( Russian Яндекс.Дзен ) is a personal recommendation service of Yandex , the technology of machine learning used.

Zen creates a feed with content that automatically adapts to the interests of the user. The choice of content is based on analysis of browsing history , user-specified preferences, location , time of day and other factors.

The number of active users is over 20 million weekly.

Zen is an example of the implementation of an artificial intelligence technology .

In order to analyze the interests and preferences of the users, Yandex uses information about the pages visited and the interests indicated by the user. The system analyzes the user's favorite pages as well as other behaviors with the aim of creating a unique model of the user's preferences. As the amount of data about the user increases, the system can offer more relevant and topic-related content, including content from sources unknown to the user. Zen adapts to changing user interests.

Predicting user interests through collaborative filtering

The service is available as part of the desktop and mobile versions of Yandex Browser and in Yandex Launcher .

Zen, Launcher and Browser belong to the technology category “Discovery” (services and apps that use artificial intelligence to adapt to the user).

The technology underlying Zen was adapted by Yandex and CERN for use in the Large Hadron Collider . It serves to provide detailed analyzes of the results of physical experiments in the LHC.

history

In 1997, Yandex began research in language processing , machine learning, and recommendation systems. In 2009, Yandex developed MatrixNet, a machine learning algorithm that became one of the key components in how Zen works.

The first Yandex service to use referral technology was Yandex.Music, which launched in September 2014. This technology was then integrated into Yandex.Market and Yandex.Radio.

A beta version of Zen was released in June 2015 . Initially, only media content was displayed in the Zen content feed and the service was only available to 5% of Yandex Browser users on Android with a registered Yandex account. Before that, Zen was available in an experimental form on the zen.yandex.ru website.

In the months that followed, more content types were added to Zen such as image galleries, articles, blogs , forums, and YouTube videos, etc.

As of April 2017, Zen is available in over 50 languages and more than 100 countries, including the United States , India, and Brazil .

Finances

Zen belongs to the "experimental" segment and is one of Yandex's experimental businesses. According to data from 2015, the company was able to generate almost half a billion rubles in sales with this segment . In the 2nd quarter of 2016, Yandex had a turnover of 153 million rubles with Zen and other experimental services.

The monetization of the service is thanks to the blocks of advertising built into the newsfeeds (in Russia , advertising is provided by Yandex.Direct).

Competitor

After Zen was released, several large companies announced that they would also offer a personal recommendation service. In May 2016, the Mail.Ru Group presented a similar project called Likemore, which offers content from the social network VK ( VKontakte ). In August 2016, Google launched a trial version of a similar service that recommends news articles. Even Apple and Facebook have launched news services with similar functions.
