Yandex Launcher ( Russian Яндекс.Лончер ) is a free GUI - Shell for organizing the workspace on Android - smartphones .

Functions

According to the information from The Next Web, one of the main functions of Yandex Launcher is the built-in recommendation service . The recommendation service is based on machine learning technology , which is used to provide apps , games, videos and other content that could be of interest to the user. The main elements of Launcher are the content feed with personalized recommendations from Yandex Zen, as well as a system of recommended apps. Both elements are integrated into the Launcher and analyze the user's favorite pages and other aspects of their behavior to provide a model of user preferences.

Other functions of the launcher: themes for the user interface, collections of background images, quick search for contacts, apps and websites, search for app icon color, “smart” folders and widgets , integrated notifications for icons. Screen Manager, a visual editor grid for icons.

history

In 2009, SPB Software released the SPB Mobile Shell application. In 2011, Yandex bought SPB Software. This enabled Yandex to secure the rights to the company's products, including the SPB Shell 3D. This was a paid application.

After the takeover by Yandex, the shell was given a new name - Yandex.Shell. The company's services have been integrated into it; it was available free of charge to users from Russia and other countries.

In 2014, Yandex released a modified Android firmware called Yandex.Kit. The Yandex services were tightly integrated into the firmware. A standard app supplied with this firmware was the launcher based on Yandex.Shell. The Yandex.Kit was preinstalled on Huawei smartphones.

On October 6, 2015, the Yandex Launcher GUI shell was released. Despite the fact that the developers of Yandex.Shell and Yandex.Kit were involved in programming the launcher, these projects have little in common. Unlike the launcher, the kit was aimed at businesses and was not sold through Google Play . The monetization scheme and geographical distribution of the shell were fundamentally different.

On October 8, 2015, Yandex Launcher was accidentally blocked by Google Play. However, this block on Google Play was immediately lifted.

After the start, the launcher was only available for users from Latin America , afterwards the installation was released for users from the EU countries, USA , Russia and other countries. The app was then available worldwide on December 14, 2015.

In October 2016, Yandex offered to pre-install its apps (including Yandex Launcher) for the resellers and manufacturers of Android smartphones. Participants in this program were MTS (Russia), Multilaser ( Brazil ), ZTE ( China ), Wileyfox ( UK ), Posh Mobile and others.

At the beginning of 2016, the service's foreign audience was three times larger than the Russian audience.

Yandex Launcher uses artificial intelligence technology to generate personalized recommendations . The system analyzes which of the recommended apps were installed or ignored by the user and, based on these predictions, determines which apps may be of interest to the user later. The more a user communicates with the launcher, the more precise the recommendations become. The user's place of residence, interests and other factors also affect the recommendations.

The launcher is one of Yandex's “Discovery” products. Yandex Zen, which is part of the launcher, also belongs to this category.

Various design elements of the launcher are generated by algorithms . In particular, the colors of the app information cards are automatically selected based on the color gamut of the app icons.

Launcher uses the search engines Yandex, Google or Bing (depending on the user's choice) to search the Internet .

Monetization

Launcher's monetization is thanks to its built-in recommendation services. Native advertising will be displayed within the Yandex Zen content feed. Most of the recommendations in the app's recommendation service are selected without considering the commercial component, but if the user installs one of the commercial recommendations, Yandex receives a commission from the advertising network.

According to 2016 data, the business activities of this “experimental area” of Yandex (which includes Yandex Launcher and Yandex Zen, as well as a number of other company's products) generated 153 million rubles in sales.

The head of the service is Fyodor Jeschow. He previously worked at SPB Software and SPB TV.

Before that, this project was headed by Dmitry Polishchuk.

criticism

Yandex Launcher has been criticized for lacking the ability to fine-tune the app. For example, the display of symbol names cannot be switched off. Launcher also received criticism for the small selection of wallpapers in the online collection.

Competitor

Two of the major search engine providers ( Google and Yahoo ) have their own launchers for Android.
