history

Originally, the in the early 1990s by Len Paul founded concert area was located in an old warehouse of Downtown of San Diego . Initially, the SOMA was used as a disco , and live concerts were rarely played. A special feature was that the facility had a basement room next to the nightclub, which was called The Dungeon and was designed for about 100 people. Many local bands played in the dungeon . If the group was able to attract a larger number of visitors, the concert was moved to the main stage on the ground floor. Until the move in 1994, for example, Rocket from the Crypt , Unwritten Law , blink-182 , Stone Temple Pilots and Buck-O-Nine played at SOMA.

In 1994 the concert hall moved to an old warehouse on Metro Street south of the University of San Diego . Until it was temporarily closed in 1999, Fugazi , Faith No More , Pavement , The Smashing Pumpkins , The Ramones and Weezer played in the event center. In 1995 Dave Matthews Band played a concert which was completely broadcast on the radio.

In 2002 the SOMA was reopened. It moved into a former multiplex cinema, which was remodeled into a concert hall. A wall separates the main stage from the side stage. The main stage has space for 2,700 visitors, while the side stage is designed for 500 guests. In 2004 Switchfoot played a concert at SOMA, which was recorded and released on live DVD.
