Creation and publication

Emergence

The musicians worked on the album for a total of two months in Black Rock Studios on the Greek island of Santorini . The group became aware of the studio on the Internet when they searched for the “most unique studio in the world”. Previously, the band spent three months writing the new album, starting in January.

Jordan Fish , the band's keyboardist, was announced as the unofficial producer . Oliver Sykes told the New Musical Express that "producers are good", but they "too often want to emphasize the importance of their profession."

"Producers are fine. But they want to justify the importance of their jobs sometimes, so they say things to you like: 'Oh I know - why can't you do it in the swimming pool?' "

A part of the money that the group saved for the engagement was invested in a personal trainer , who looked after the musicians during the recording.

Content, name and music style

Happy Song described Sykes as the "unofficial title track" of the album.

According to Gavin Haynes, the group continues their musical change. Although the pieces are still more Metal- heavy, he attests that the group has a wide range of musical influences. In this way, comparisons can be made with artists like Panic! at the Disco , Interpol , Jane's Addiction and the late Radiohead pull. Jon Wiederhorn from the US American Rolling Stone describes that the musicians pursued their musical careers, whereby the sound of the group, which initially "was inevitably metal", developed into a "dynamic sound construct of alternative - and indie rock and pop " have. He describes that the group “evolved from metalcore to cinematic pop rock ” that is more reminiscent of Muse and Linkin Park than Metallica and Lamb of God . Daniel Furnari of the Australian Blunt Magazine also writes that the band's music has developed further. He describes that the music is now more suitable for the Glastonbury Festival than for the Warped Tour . He emphasizes that the group does not fall back into the sound of the past.

Reviews

English speaking

Tom Bryant of the US American Alternative Press gave full marks for That's the Spirit . He describes how the group left deathcore with the release of Sempiternal . The Kerrang and Rock Sound also gave top marks. Lanre Bakare from the Guardian gave 3 out of 5 points and describes how the group has grown from a Metalcore band to a supplier of a screaming “I'm-mad-at-your-mothers” Nu-Metal band. He describes the group as a Nu-Metal reanimator. At Metacritic the album received a rating of 88 points based on ten album reviews.

German speaking

Eike Cramer from the German Metal Hammer describes that after eleven years of band history the band has finally finished with the deathcore of the first few years. He writes that the album consists entirely of "brilliantly produced and polished, modern rock numbers". The lyrics are still "wonderfully emotional" and "fit perfectly with the desperate vocal melodies." He awarded six out of seven possible evaluation points. Pascal Staub from the Austrian Stormbringer is of the opinion that from an artistic point of view, the band have grown up and compose at a level that one would not have expected at their debut times. ”He describes the album as a high point in the band's discography.

Anton Kostudis from Metal.de writes that the album turned out to be a good, atmospheric rock record despite “several minutes of idle time”, “which the band's numerous critics should also acknowledge.” He gave a total of 7 points. On Whiskey-soda.de it is said that “the band has not completely reinvented itself”, that the album “is nevertheless dense, emotionally exhausting and littered with musical brilliance.” According to Jan Hassenpflug from Laut.de, “a lot writhes Melancholy and even more melody through the synthetic-soaked sound thread on the album. "

Criticism in fan circles

Although the album was received extremely positively in the media, it received severe criticism from its own fan circles. Many fans from the very beginning expressed their displeasure with the musical change in the group. In some circles it is said that these fans blame keyboardist Jordan Fish, who was officially accepted into the band shortly after guitarist Jona Weinhofen left the band in 2013.
