Marlena Shaw (* 22. September 1942 in New Rochelle , New York , as Marlina Burgess ) is an American jazz singer who also numerous during their five-decade career record in the areas of R & B , Soul , Disco and Pop did. Two of her best-known songs, California Soul and Woman of the Ghetto from 1969, have been sampled numerous times .

Live and act

Shaw first sang gospel and was introduced to jazz by her uncle, the trumpeter Jimmy Burgess. In 1952 she performed with him at the Apollo Theater in Harlem . She did not finish her teacher training in college and continued to perform as a singer. In 1963 she worked with Howard McGhee . Then she first appeared in the smaller clubs; In 1966 she received a contract with Chess Records from Dick LaPalm , who had heard her at the Chicago Playboy Club , and released her first two albums on their sub-label Cadet Records . Ramsey Lewis drew her as a singer for his version of Wade in the Water (1966). In the same year she also wrote the text for Mercy, Mercy, Mercy . For four years from 1968 she was a singer in the Count Basie Orchestra , with which she also toured Europe. In 1972 she was signed by Blue Note Records . She became known to a wider audience as a performer of Look At Me, Look At You (1977) and the disco hit Touch Me in the Morning (1978, originally associated with Diana Ross ). She also recorded with Phil Upchurch .

In 1973 Shaw performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival , 2001 and 2007 at the North Sea Jazz Festival .
