Bengt Berndtsson (born January 26, 1933 in Gothenburg ; † June 4, 2015 there ) was a Swedish football player . The winger , who won the Swedish championship with IFK Göteborg in 1958 , took part in the 1958 World Cup with the Swedish national team and was runner-up in the tournament.

Career

Berndtsson started his career at Hisingstads IS and Lundby IF . There the IFK Gothenburg became aware of the offensive player and signed him at the age of 18. On August 5, 1951, he made his debut against Jönköpings Södra IF in the Allsvenskan . With Owe Ohlsson and Bertil Johansson signed by the club in 1954 , he formed the club's powerful storm.

On May 16, 1956, Berndtsson made his debut in the Swedish national team when they separated in the first international match of the year at Råsundastadion 0-0 draw from the English national team . After he was no longer considered in the following year, he moved back to the national team during the successful season 1957/58 and was part of the Swedish squad at the World Cup in his own country in the summer. However, he was only used during the tournament in the 0-0 draw in the last group game against Wales , but was celebrated as runner-up after defeating Germany in the semi-finals and the subsequent 2: 5 final defeat against the Brazilian national team . The year was crowned by winning the Von Rosens Cup as the Swedish national champion at the end of the year. He was one of the eleven players with the most appearances during the season.

To bridge the winter break in Sweden, he moved in the winter of 1959 and 1961 on loan to the Welsh club Barry Town . Berndtsson ran on the national team until 1964, before he ended his international career after 29 internationals in which he had scored six goals. He stayed with his club IFK Göteborg for 17 years until the end of 1967. He scored 125 goals in 599 games he played for the club. His 348 first division appearances for the Swedish club represent a club record.
