qualification

The Swedish national team was drawn into Group 5 of the European qualification together with France and Norway .

On October 9, 1968, the Swedish team met in Stockholm for their first qualifying game against Norway. Three goals from Ove Kindvall and two goals from Bo Larsson brought a 5-0 win over their Scandinavian neighbors. On June 19 of the following year there was the second leg in Oslo. Örjan Persson , Leif Eriksson and Ove Kindvall ensured a 3-0 break lead, which Ove Grahn and Roland Grip extended to a 5-0 lead by the 49th minute of the game. After the team switched back a little, Norway was able to reduce the score to 2: 5 with two goals from Ola Dybwad-Olsen .

Since Norway and France had each won once in the direct duels, Sweden was enough to win in the third group game to qualify early for the finals. Then on October 15, 1969 in Stockholm with two goals from Ove Kindvall also a 2-0 success, so that the final game on November 1 in Paris was only of statistical importance. Therefore, the 3-0 defeat by goals from Jean-Claude Bras , who scored his only two international goals, and Jean Djorkaeff no longer had much significance.

The Swedish selection was drawn into a group with the two-time world champions Italy and Uruguay . The Group B completed the newcomer Israel .

On June 3, 1970 Sweden met Italy in the first group game at the Estadio Nemesio Díez in Toluca . In front of 14,000 spectators, Angelo Domenghini scored the goal of the day in the 10th minute of the game.

Four days later, in the game against Israel, the teams that had lost their opening game came to a duel. Although Tom Turesson was able to shoot his colors in the 53rd minute in front of 10,000 onlookers in Toluca, Mordechai Spiegler scored an equalizer for Israel just three minutes later.

Since the Uruguayan selection in the duel of the then record world champions with Italy only managed a 0-0 draw, the Swedish selection could still hope to advance to the quarter-finals before the final game on June 10 at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla Success with two goals difference with a tie meant a better goal difference.
