Spiegler in later years

Mordechai Spiegler ( Hebrew מרדכי שפיגלר; * August 19, 1944 in Sochi , then the Soviet Union , now Russia ) is a former Israeli football player and coach . He came to Israel at the age of five and was to become one of the most outstanding players in the country's football history. As captain, he led the Israeli national soccer team to participate in the 1968 Olympic Games and the 1970 World Cup. With the Maccabi Netanja club , he was both a player and a coach of Israel champions.

Career

societies

Spiegler began his playing career in 1962 with Maccabi Netanja . Between 1966 and 1969 he was the top scorer in the Israeli League three times . In 1971, Spiegler Netanja, who could be used in attacking midfield and in the storm, led to the first championship in the club's history. In total, he made 375 league games and 168 goals in Israel. In the all-time list of goalscorers he takes 5th place. In 1966, 1969, 1970 and 1971 he was named Israel's Footballer of the Year .

When FC Bayern Hof was the first German sports team to travel to Israel in 1969 , they reinforced the then record champions Hapoel Petach Tikwa , who won the game 3-0, with other national players in the Hofer's second game . Spiegler contributed a hit to this.

In 1972 he moved to France to Paris FC . In the following year he joined the second division Paris Saint-Germain with whom he made promotion to the first division. After only one season he returned to Israel to Maccabi Netanja, only to follow an offer from New York Cosmos in 1975, at the beginning of the heyday of the North American Soccer League .

But he only stayed in the USA for one season. He played again for Netanya until 1978, before completing another season as a player-coach at Hapoel Haifa at the supposed end of his career . In the 1981/82 season he was still on the ball for Beitar Tel Aviv , but could not prevent the team from relegating to the second division there.

National team

He made his debut for the Israeli national team on January 2, 1964 against Hong Kong . In May and June 1964, he and Israel won the third Asian Football Championship held in Israel , which was played between the hosts, South Korea, India and Hong Kong. He scored two goals, which together with Indian Singh made him the top scorer.

As captain, he led Israel to take part in the soccer tournament of the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico , where the team advanced to the quarter-finals. There, Israel was eliminated after a draw after extra time due to a drawing of lots against Bulgaria . A penalty shoot-out to make the final decision on the game was not planned at the time.

In the two years that followed, Spiegler led the national team to the only ever participation of Israel in a soccer world championship. After North Korea , the sensation team of the Soccer World Cup in 1966 , refused to compete in the qualification in Israel, only the oceanic nations New Zealand and Australia remained as opponents for Israel. Israel defeated New Zealand 2-0 and 4-0 in two games in Tel Aviv. Israel won 1-0 at home against Australia - this was the only qualifying game in which Spiegler failed to score. In the second leg in Sydney he scored the early opening goal for Israel, but they had to accept an equalizer in the closing stages.

At the tournament in Mexico in 1970, Israel was initially defeated by the eventual fourth of this World Cup, Uruguay, with 0: 2, but achieved two respectable successes in the two other group games with a draw against Sweden and the European champions and later runner-up world champions Italy . Israel was eliminated after the preliminary round. In the draw against Sweden, Spiegler scored with a remarkable volley to make it 1-1, which became known as the “Toluca Goal”.

He made his last appearance for Israel on March 20, 1977 in a World Cup qualifier in the South Korean capital Seoul , which the hosts won 3-1. Spiegler played a total of 57 international A matches recognized by FIFA , scoring 24 goals. In various lists, the number of his international matches is given as 82 and he is assigned 32 goals. These international games also include, for example, games within the framework of the Olympic Games as well as games against U-23 teams and city selections. Spiegler is the record scorer for the Israeli national team.

Spiegler is the only player who has scored four goals in a game for Israel. In the 4-0 win in the friendly against the USA on September 25, 1968, he scored all goals in the last twenty minutes. He also achieved two hat-tricks for the national team.

additional

After Spiegler had already worked as a player- coach at Hapoel Haifa in 1977 , he also trained Maccabi Haifa and Beitar Tel Aviv , where he was relegated to the second division in 1982 as a player- coach . The highlight of his coaching career was the Israeli championship in 1983 with his home club Netanya, the club's last championship so far.

In 2003, on the 50th anniversary of UEFA , Spiegler was chosen as the most important Israeli player of the previous 50 years as his country's Golden Player .
