Arne Bengt Selmosson (born March 29, 1931 in Götene , † February 22, 2002 there ) was a Swedish football player . With the Swedish national team he was runner-up in 1958. With AS Roma he won the Europa League forerunner trade fair cup in 1961 . In Italy, the striker was nicknamed Raggio di Luna because of his blond hair , which translates as "ray moon".

Live and act

Beginnings in Sweden and the national team

Coming from the youth of Sils IF in his hometown Götene, he joined the runner-up Jönköpings Södra IF in June 1950 . With that he was only 5th, 9th and 7th in the next few years and in 1954 he was relegated as 11th of twelve clubs. Personally, however, he introduced himself very well and immediately became a regular player. He scored 33 goals in 81 league games.

Already in September, on the occasion of a 1: 5 defeat against Norway in Jönköpings home stadium, the Stadsparksvallen , he was used in the B national team. In June 1951 they even made their debut in the senior national team , but in Reykjavik they lost 4: 3 against Iceland. In September he came in the Råsunda of Solna in another friendly international match, this time against Finland, to a 3-2 success. In his third A international match in May 1953, again at Råsunda, this time it was about qualifying for the 1954 World Cup. Selmosson increased there in the 26th minute to 2-0 against Belgium, but in the end the guests had 3-2 Upper hand and should then qualify for the finals in Switzerland.

Italy: Udinese and Lazio

For the 1954/55 season, Selmosson moved from Jönköping to Serie A to Udinese Calcio for 150 million lire , at that time around one million German marks . This also meant the temporary end of Selmosson in the national team, where Sweden at that time in principle renounced Proffs - professional footballers. With the Northern Italians he became a regular player straight away and formed a dangerous storm duo together with Lorenzo Bettini . With 14 goals in 34 games, he played a major role in the fact that Udine, 15th in the previous year, played an excellent season and was just four points behind AC Milan as runner-up. Since at the end of the season Udine was forcibly transferred to Serie B due to a bribery scandal going back to the season 1952/53 , Selmosson left the Friulians with Bettini in the direction of Lazio Rome .

Here he continued to play at a high level and formed an equally feared attack with the Brazilian Humberto Tozzi , who was usually given preference over Bettini. In three seasons at Lazio, in which the Romans were 4th, 3rd and 15th and qualified in 1958 for the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia , which was held again for the first time since 1943 , he scored 31 goals in 101 league games.

1958 World Cup - AS Roma and Udinese again

For the 1958 World Cup , he was appointed by the English national coach George Raynor as one of six Italian legionnaires in the Swedish squad. Sweden made it to the final of this tournament, but the sensational Brazilians won 5-2. Selmosson was only used in the 0-0 group game against Wales, his fourth and last international match. The competition from players like Gunnar Gren , Kurt Hamrin , Nils Liedholm and Lennart Skoglund was enormous.

In the meantime, a financial crisis that had been simmering for some time at Lazio came to a head, which led to Selmosson being sold to local rivals AS Roma for the 1958/59 season against his will, as it is said, which at the time caused a lot of nagging among the fans. Lazio won the 1958 Coppa Italia in September without the abandoned Selmosson .

With the Roma, who were trained there by his legendary compatriot Gunnar Nordahl at the beginning and end of his first season , he won the Messestädte Cup in 1960/61 , where he scored a goal in the semi-finals against Hibernian FC from Edinburgh , but in the finals was not used against Birmingham City . In his first season with Roma he became the first player to score for both clubs in the Roman derby; The Serbian Aleksandar Kolarov was only supposed to follow suit in September 2018 when he netted for Roma. After three seasons in the Giallorossi jersey , for which he scored 30 times in 87 league games and who were 6th, 9th and 5th in Serie A during this time - and always ahead of Lazio, which was even relegated recently - he returned Udinese Calcio back.

After the first season, where he met six times in 23 games, Udine was relegated to Serie B. Even so, Selmosson stayed with the Friulians for two more seasons - 50 games, 12 goals. At the end of the 1963/64 season, Udinese even rose to the third division. Selmosson, now 33 years old, ended his great playing career and returned to Sweden.

Return to Sweden

As a player coach, he first worked for Skövde AIK . He led this club from the fourth division to promotion to the then four-track second division in 1966. In the Norra Götaland group, Skövde AIK finished third and second in 1967 and 1968. Even after his departure, the club stayed at the top of the respective group until relegation in 1975. He then worked from 1969 to 1971 as a player- coach at Götene IF , in his birthplace. He led the club in his first year there in the third division of Sweden where he was then able to hold out for six seasons until 1975. Selmosson also had a sports shop in Götene for many years.

Arne Selmosson died on February 22, 2002 at the age of 70 in Götene. In 2009 he got a memorial in his hometown. In 2012 it was decided in Udine to name a small street after him. In 2013 he was accepted by the Association of Swedish Football Historians and Statisticians as the 45th member of their Hall of Fame .
