Erik Kenneth Edman (born November 11, 1978 in Huskvarna ) is a Swedish football player . The defender , who took part in two world and one European championship finals with the Swedish national team , has played in Sweden, Italy, Germany, England, France and the Netherlands in his career so far. With Helsingborgs IF he won several national titles in his home country.

Career

Career start with first titles

Edman started playing football at Habo IF in 1985 , where his father worked as a coach. In 1994 the defender joined the traditional club Helsingborgs IF , where he was initially used for three years as a youth. In 1997 he made his debut for the club in the Allsvenskan and quickly established himself as a regular. In his second professional year he was able to celebrate his first title win with the national cup and in 1999 he contributed to the club's sixth championship title in the first half of the season - the first since 1941. In the summer, however, after twelve season games, he left the club and went to southern Europe.

Luckily abroad

Edman's first stop abroad was the seven-time Italian champions Torino Calcio , who had just celebrated their return to excellence as runner-up in Serie B. There, however, they seemed to be able to do without the footballing skills of the Swedish defender, with only two appearances in the cup until winter. Karlsruher SC , who had been in relegation difficulty in the 2nd Bundesliga under coach Joachim Löw , had become aware of him and his situation during the winter break in search of reinforcements and therefore loaned him out until the end of the season. After an injury, however, he could only play part of the games and was therefore of little help to the club. At the end of the season, both KSC and Torino Calcio were relegated.

Return to Sweden

In this situation, those responsible at AIK called and directed Edman back to Sweden. The club's trust in the injured player built him up and after his return to the field in September that year in the game against Västra Frölunda IF he established himself as a regular at his new employer. The Swedish national team also took notice of him through strong performances and nominated him in December 2000 for the international matches played the following January, which traditionally consist of a national selection made up mainly of players from Allsvenskan. At the side of other debutants such as Zlatan Ibrahimović , he was in the national shirt for the first time in the 0-0 draw against the Faroese national team .

As with many players, this initially seemed to be Edman's only international appearance. He was not nominated for the King's Cup in February, but was also not appointed to the international matches that followed. However, he was not impressed by that and played another good half series. Especially in the national cup, he showed strong nerves from the penalty spot . First he helped the club to advance with a converted penalty against Örebro SK and was also one of the successful shooters in the final when it went on penalties against IF Elfsborg . However, his team-mate Sharbel Touma missed his penalty, so that Edman was without a title win during his time at AIK.

Stay abroad with success

In his year, despite having no title, especially personally, Edman gained mental strength. - he had returned to the international spotlight, not least because of his international appearance. Therefore, he moved to SC Heerenveen in the Dutch honor division in the summer of 2001 . Right away he earned a regular place there and was able to celebrate his entry into the UEFA Cup at the end of his first season by reaching fourth place in the table . In addition, he played his way back to the national team from November 2001 and was on the field in the 1-1 draw against the English national team in his second international match. The following summer he was taken to the 2002 World Cup , but remained without a game minute.

In the 2002/03 competition , however, they immediately failed in the first round. After a 3-0 defeat in the first leg at FC Național Bucharest , a 2-0 home win wasn't enough. At the end of the season, the direct qualification for an international competition was missed by a seventh place and the final of the UI Cup was over when Villarreal FC prevailed after a 2-1 win in Heerenveen with a 0-0 draw in the second leg . In his third year he was one of the regulars and helped the club to qualify for the European Cup with another fourth place. In the summer he was appointed to the squad of the Swedish selection at the European Championship 2004 and was used three times during the tournament. With his constant performance at the club and in the national team, he also attracted attention in the top European leagues.

In the major European leagues

Edman signed a four-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur after EURO 2004 . There he was also one of the regular players and after the coach change from Jacques Santini to Martin Jol , the season ended as ninth in the table.

After only one season, however, Edman changed clubs shortly after the start of the new season and went to Stade Rennes in Ligue 1 . There he played alongside his compatriots Kim Källström and Andreas Isaksson . The defender hoped that his move would give him better chances of being considered at the 2006 World Cup . After the start of the season, which was a bit turbulent due to the quarrels about the change, he was able to play in the regular eleven of the French team. His hopes of participating in the World Cup were fulfilled and he played all four Swedes games until they were eliminated in the round of 16 against hosts Germany. After Edman had only missed international business by one point with Rennes as seventh in the first year, the team was in fourth place after the 2006/07 season. After you had turned off locomotive Sofia in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup, the group stage, which ended with the last place in the table.

During the winter break of the 2007/08 season, Edman moved back to the Premier League . His new employer was Wigan Athletic in January 2008 , where he signed a two-and-a-half year contract valid until summer 2010. In the English first division he established himself as an important pillar of the team. However, he was seriously injured on Holy Saturday, March 22, 2008, when playing against Blackburn Rovers . In a collision with Jason Roberts , he suffered a cruciate ligament tear . After a long injury break, he made a short comeback for Wigan in January 2009 on the occasion of the 3-1 defeat in the FA Cup against Tottenham Hotspur from the 84th minute of the game, in February he returned to the national team in a 2-0 victory over Austria . It was not until May that he made his league comeback when he played twice as a substitute at the end of the Premier League season. Under coach Roberto Martínez he hardly came into play in the following season, as this Maynor Figueroa preferred.

Return to Sweden again

In February 2010 Edman moved again to Allsvenskan. At his first professional station, Helsingborgs IF, he signed a five-year contract. At the side of Mattias Lindström , Marcus Lantz and Joel Ekstrand , he was immediately part of the regular formation of the club supervised by Conny Karlsson , which was runner-up behind Malmö FF in the 2010 season . Nevertheless, the year was not without a title, as the final of the national cup was reached. In the game against second division club Hammarby IF , which was won 1-0 by a goal from Rasmus Jönsson , he was the entire season in the Söderstadion on the pitch. He was also part of the starting line-up in the Supercup at the beginning of the following year, after goals from Marcus Nilsson and Erik Sundin when Wilton Figueiredo conceded , the game against Malmö FF was won 2-1. In the following season, the club continued its successful course, Edman completed the triple win in Sweden with the team by winning the championship title and defending the title in the national cup . In a season marked by several injuries, he was only on the field in just under half of the season's games and followed the cup final from outside the field.

In autumn 2011, Edman started training as a trainer alongside Tobias Linderoth , Nils-Eric Johansson , Anders Andersson and Marcus Lantz .
