Marcus Nilsson (born February 26, 1988 ) is a Swedish football player . The defender , who made his debut for the Swedish national team in 2011 , won the national cup with Helsingborgs IF in 2010 .

Career

Career start in Sweden and national team debut

Nilsson started playing football at Rydebäcks IF . In 2000 he switched to the youth department at Helsingborgs IF . There he went through the individual youth teams and was appointed to the junior teams of Svenska Fotbollförbundet . In 2007 he made his debut in the Allsvenskan and was able to establish himself temporarily in the regular formation during the following season. Under coach Bo Nilsson he finally belonged to the regular team in the 2009 season alongside Marcus Lantz , Andreas Landgren , Pär Hansson and René Makondele and played 25 games this season. As a result, the club extended his contract for three years in the summer of 2009. At the same time, he also played his way into the Swedish U-21 team , with which he missed qualifying for the U-21 European Championship 2011 in the play-off games against the Swiss U-21 national team the following year . However, the year was marked by success for him. Although he narrowly missed the championship title with the club as runner-up behind Malmö FF , the team, now coached by Conny Karlsson , won the cup with a 1-0 final win against Hammarby IF .

National coach Erik Hamrén also honored Nilsson's achievements and appointed him to the national team for the opening international games in South Africa in 2011. In a 1-1 draw against a South African selection , he made his debut on January 22nd in the national jersey. Although he was not able to keep himself in the national team as a player active in Sweden, he was an undisputed regular player on the defensive at HIF. At the side of Mattias Lindström , Ardian Gashi and Markus Holgersson , he was one of the guarantors that the club was at the top of the table halfway through the season.

Change abroad

As a national player, Nilsson had attracted attention outside the country's borders and left his home country in July 2011. At Dutch club FC Utrecht , who had recently signed another Swede with Johan Mårtensson , he signed a four-year contract on July 12. A week later, a fellow countryman joined his former club mate Alexander Gerndt .
