Sven Markus Holgersson (born April 16, 1985 in Landskrona ) is a Swedish football player . The defender has played his career so far in his home country, the United States , England , Cyprus and Denmark . He won various titles in Sweden and played an international match for the Swedish national team in 2012 .
Career
Markus Holgersson began playing football at IF Lödde , later he played in Landskrona BoIS's youth and from 2002 at Helsingborgs IF .
In 2005 Holgersson joined the third division club Ängelholms FF in Division 1 . At the end of the 2007 season he rose with the club in the second-rate Superettan and was one of the key players in establishing the club in the second-highest division. At the beginning of 2009 he switched back to Helsingborgs IF. Here, too, after initial difficulties, he established himself as a regular player and won the regional cup in 2010 . Under coach Conny Karlsson he was a regular on the defensive when the team around Ardian Gashi , Marcus Nilsson and Mattias Lindström won the triple of the state championship, state cup and supercup in 2011 . He also played his way into the circle of the Swedish national team , selection coach Erik Hamrén nominated him for a January tour of the national team in early 2012. In the 5-0 win over Qatar on January 23, 2012, he was in the starting line-up and formed with Emil Salomonsson , Erdin Demir and Mikael Dyrestam the defensive line.
A few days earlier, Holgersson had moved to the US club New York Red Bulls after his contract with Helsingborgs IF expired . There he was trained by his compatriot Hans Backe , under whose direction Holgersson was eliminated as a regular with the team after third place in the Eastern Conference in the play-offs against DC United . After a coach change - the former assistant coach Mike Petke took over for Backe - he won the Eastern Conference the following year, but failed again in the play-offs, this time to Houston Dynamo .
At the beginning of January 2014, Holgersson broke the contractual agreement with the New York Red Bulls one year before his contract expired. After four weeks without a club, he signed a contract until the end of the season with the English second division club Wigan Athletic in February . In the Football League Championship he did not get beyond the role of a supplementary player under coach Uwe Rösler , and his contract was not extended.
At the beginning of August Holgersson returned to Helsingborgs IF, who took him under contract with the Icelander Victor Pálsson until the end of the season with the option of an extension. Just three weeks and four league appearances later, however, he left the club again shortly before the end of the summer transfer period and joined Anorthosis Famagusta .
