The beginnings

Petke gathered at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School, a private Roman Catholic high school in West Islip in New York State some experience in football. He later moved to Southern Connecticut State University , with whose soccer team he won the NCAA Division II National Title in 1995 and was Conference Rookie of the Year as a young player in the same year . In 1997 he got the title of NECC Defensive Player of the Year and was in the selection of the NSCAA / Umbro First Team All-America that same year.

Club career

Petke started his career in 1998, where he was elected in the first round of the NY / NJ MetroStars in the course of the MLS College Draft . He made his debut in Major League Soccer on April 17, 1998 in the game against Chicago Fire , which the New Yorkers won 1-0. He spent five years with the MetroStars, becoming the most constant player in his team, which during this time had to constantly change the entire team structure due to frequent coach and player changes. In addition, Petke went down in the history books of the club with the New York MetroStars, as he became the player who has completed the most games (134 league games or 157 games including cup and friendly games). He became well known in the United States on August 20, 2000 after Mamadou Diallo of Tampa Bay Mutiny had broken the ribs of Metro goalkeeper Mike Ammann just four days earlier . Achieved Petke who rarely gates, scored a goal against Colorado and revealed out a T-shirt that said August 16th: Crime of the Century ( dt. "16 August: Crime of the Century", front) and Revenge is Coming (Eng. "Vengeance will come") on the back. This act, which his teammates and fans perceived as correct, was punished by the club and the league and Petke was brought to justice. Mamadou Diallo received no disciplinary action for his serious foul on the Metro goalie.

After an impressive season, Petke celebrated winning the Eastern Division title with his team in 2000 . Shortly afterwards, he went to Germany for a two-week trial at FC Bayern Munich . After the two-week training period, another German club, 1. FC Kaiserslautern , made the young American an offer. Despite all this, Petke decided to continue playing for the MetroStars. Petke, who was used three times at the MLS All-Star Games , was transferred to DC United in 2003 after his performance in the 2002 season did not meet the demands of the MetroStars. In 2004 he won the MLS Cup with DC .

In May 2005 Petke moved to the Colorado Rapids where he was able to establish himself well, quickly became a key player and made it into the final of the Western Conference in the same year . He would continue to be a driving force in the defense of the Colorado Rapids for the next three years.

On November 26, 2008 it was announced that the New York Red Bulls had signed the now 32-year-old, but had to release him for the time being due to financial discrepancies.
