Johan Mårtensson (born February 16, 1989 in Skövde ) is a Swedish football player. The defensive midfielder has played his career in Sweden and the Netherlands so far.

Career

Career start in Sweden

Mårtensson played at Ulvåkers IF when he was young , before moving up to the team at Tibro AIK at the age of 18. At the beginning of 2008, Ulvåkers IF awarded him to third division Skövde AIK in Division 1 . There he moved into the focus of those responsible for the U-19 national team and took part with the selection team in the qualification for the U-19 European Championship in 2008 , in which he failed with the team. However, he had also drawn attention to higher class. Already in the run-up to the qualifying tournament taking place in Switzerland in May 2008, the Gothenburg club GAIS announced the commitment of the defensive specialist , who is considered a perspective player.

Coach Magnus Pehrsson used Mårtensson directly after the summer break due to the European Championship in 2008 , when the young player made his debut as a substitute for Andreas Tobiasson in the 2-0 home defeat by GIF Sundsvall at the end of July . Just two weeks later he was in the starting line-up for the first time, by the end of the 2008 season he had played 15 league games and held the class with the team at the side of Dime Jankulovski , Bobbie Friberg Da Cruz and Wanderson do Carmo in eleventh place. In the 4-2 away win at Hammarby IF in mid-August, he scored his first goal in the Allsvenskan . Alexander Axén then took over the coaching role for Pehrsson, who had moved to Denmark, and Mårtensson established himself as a regular in preparation for the 2009 season and was in the starting lineup in his 25 league appearances in the following season. At the same time, he played his way into the Swedish U-21 team supervised by Tommy Söderberg and Jörgen Lennartsson , with which he competed in qualifying for the 2011 U-21 European Championship . In the decisive play-off games against Switzerland in autumn 2010 , however, he was only on the bench and could not prevent the elimination.

Mårtensson had established himself as a regular in the defensive midfield of the Gothenburg club at a young age. As a result, the club tried to extend its contract. During the preparation for the 2011 season , the club, the player and his advisor Stefan Pettersson agreed in February to extend the contract until the end of 2012.

Change abroad

Despite the contract extension in the spring, Mårtensson left Sweden in the summer of 2011. On July 9, the Dutch club FC Utrecht announced that they had reached an agreement with the player and his former club. At his new club he signed a four-year contract that ran until the summer of 2015. In the beginning he was a regular player for large parts of his new employer, in his first season in 25 games this season. He then moved into the second tier under coach Jan Wouters due to various injuries.

In the summer of 2014 Mårtensson returned to Sweden and joined Helsingborgs IF .
