Gustavo Munúa (born January 27, 1978 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan football goalkeeper and current coach.

Player career

Munúa began his career with Uruguay's serial champion Nacional Montevideo , where he made his debut in 1997. With the club he won the national championship in 1998, 2000 and 2001 under coach Hugo De León , and in 2002 coached by Daniel Carreño . With 963 minutes he holds the record in Uruguay with the longest time without conceding a goal. He's also been the first goalkeeper to score in Uruguay's professional football (a league free kick against Central Español ). He also has some penalties. He also played numerous games in the most important competition in South American club football, the Copa Libertadores . In 2003 he was signed with great expectations by Deportivo La Coruña , where he played until 2009. He had to spend most of his time on the bench, in the 2007/08 season he was able to fight for the regular place in the Galician goal after a few mistakes by competitor Dudu Aouate .

He was last noticed at Deportivo through a fight with the Israeli Dudu Aouate. According to media reports, this brawl led to legal proceedings in which Munúa was sentenced to six months imprisonment, which was optional against payment of a fine of 3,600 euros.

In mid-2009 he signed with Málaga FC , where he was able to establish himself as a regular goalkeeper in a short time. After only a year he moved to UD Levante , in whose ranks he was since August 6, 2010 and for which he completed 86 league games. In June 2013 he moved to Fiorentina .

In Florence, however, he only perceived the substitute goalkeeper role behind the Brazilian Neto in the league . However, he ran twice in the Europa League . In January 2014 Munúa returned to Uruguay and joined his former employer, Nacional Montevideo. There he played in all 15 Clausura league games in the 2013/14 season and played five games in the 2014 Copa Libertadores . In the 2014/15 season he won the championship with Nacional and was used in 27 top division games and two games in the 2015 Copa Libertadores . He then ended his active career.

National team

Munúa took part with the Uruguayan U-20 selection at the U-20 South American Championship in 1997 and finished fourth with the team. During the tournament he was used by coach Víctor Púa seven times. He was also able to reach the final of the U20 World Cup with this team in 1997 and became vice world champion. He also played for the Uruguayan senior team . Overall, he completed from his debut on May 24, 1998 to his last appearance on June 6, 2004 22 internationals for Uruguay, in which he had to accept 35 goals. He was a member of the 2001 Copa America squad and played four tournament games there. He also took part in the 2002 World Cup, but was not used. He also played during qualifying for the 2006 World Cup .

Coaching career

On June 30, 2015, he was officially introduced as the new head coach of Nacional Montevideos, succeeding the master coach Álvaro Gutiérrez, who had moved to Saudi Arabia . In June 2016, Munúa and the association ended their collaboration. Since January 2017 he has been a trainer at LDU Quito in Ecuador.
