Vegetative characteristics

The limb species are annual to perennial herbaceous plants or small shrubs . The opposite arranged leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The leaf blades of the stem leaves are linear to narrowly lanceolate.

Generative characteristics

Every two to many flowers stand together pseudo whorls , which are arranged in terminal, annual total inflorescences . There are no cover sheets .

The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The calyx is tubular to bell-shaped, ten- (rarely five-) nerved and five-toothed. The calyx teeth usually have a thorny awn . They are the same length or the top tooth is larger than the other four. The crown is zygomorphic, clearly two-lipped, its color is mostly yellow. The corolla tube is shorter than the chalice. The upper lip protrudes, is flat, with entire margins or with two columns. The lower lip has three columns, with the middle lobe being larger and often marginalized. There are four fertile stamens , two of which are longer and two are very short. The stamens are hidden like the stylus in the corolla tube.

The Klausen are rounded at the top, their surface is almost smooth to warty.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Sideritis was established by Carl von Linné . The genus name Sideritis is an ancient plant name for various representatives of the mint family and is derived from the Greek word sideros for iron .

The genus Sideritis belongs to the tribe Stachydeae in the subfamily Lamioideae within the family Lamiaceae .

The distribution area of the genus Sideritis extends from Macaronesia across the Mediterranean to Russia, Tibet and Xinjiang . The manifold center is located in the west of the area .

The genus Sideritis comprises about 140 species. The following list of species follows Govaerts et al. 2003: World Checklist of Lamiaceae , 2003 the questionnaire structure mainly follows the Flora Iberica 2010, the Flora of Turkey 1982 and the monographs of Obón & Rivera 1994 and Pérez de Paz & Negrín 1992:
