Sideritis clandestina (Syn. Sideritis theezans Boiss. & Heldr. ) Is a plant type from the family of the Labiatae (Lamiaceae). Within the genus of the branch herbs ( sideritis ) it belongs to the section Empedoclia .

description

Sideritis clandestina is a 20 to 50 cm high, at most sparsely branched, perennial plant with woolly, yellowish or gray hairs. The basal leaves are 25 to 50 mm long and 8 to 15 mm wide. They are elliptical to traffic lanceolate, notched and narrowed at the base. The stem-like leaves are 40 to 60 mm long and 9 to 16 mm wide, narrowly elongated to elliptical and with entire margins or notched.

The inflorescence consists of 4 to 20 multi-flowered pseudo whorls that are crowded or can be separated from each other. The middle bracts are a total of 11 to 30 mm long and tower above the flowers; they are broadly ovate to almost circular with woolly hairs, a heart-shaped base and a clearly separated, 4 to 15 mm long tip. The calyx is 8 to 11 mm long, has shaggy hair and a hair ring inside; the 3 to 4 mm long calyx teeth are slightly shorter than the calyx tube. The crown is 12 to 14 mm long and colored yellow; the upper lip usually has two brown stripes.

The flowering period extends from June to August.

Systematics

The species is divided into two subspecies:

  • Sideritis clandestina subsp. clandestina . This subspecies has grayish hairs. The stem leaves are narrow and elongated and at least as long as the corresponding internode . Most of the pseudo whorls are crowded and form a spike-like inflorescence, less often the lower whorls are removed. The middle bracts are 16 to 30 mm long and 10 to 20 mm wide and one to three times longer than the flowers; they are suddenly pointed with a 6 to 15 mm long tip.
  • Sideritis clandestina subsp. peloponnesiaca (Boiss. & Heldr.) Baden (Syn. Sideritis clandestina subsp. cyllenea (Boiss.) Papanic. & Kokkini ). This subspecies has yellowish hairs. The stem leaves are elliptical to elongated and shorter than the corresponding internode. Most of the pseudo whorls are separated from each other, rarely the upper ones are crowded. The middle bracts are 10 to 20 mm long and 10 to 17 mm wide and only slightly longer than the flowers; they are gradually pointed with a tip only 4 to 6 mm long.

Both subspecies have 2n = 32 chromosomes .

Distribution and location

The species is endemic to the mountains of the Peloponnese . Subsp. clandestina occurs in southern high mountains ( Taygetos and Parnon ), subsp. peloponnesiaca in the north ( Erymanthos , Aroania , Kyllini , south to the Menalo ). Both subspecies are bound to limestone and colonize rocky terrain (pastures, crevices and rubble) at an altitude of 1200 to 2300 m (subsp. Clandestina ) and 1600 to 2000 m (subsp. Peloponnesiaca ).

use

The species is a valued tea plant and is the best known of the limb herbs collected as Greek mountain tea , along with other vicarious species .
