Bürgeln Castle (Hesse)
Bürgeln Castle

The Burg Bürgeln , also called Birgel , is an abandoned castle in Bürgeln , today a district of the municipality of Cölbe in Hesse .

location

According to a map from 1726, the castle was located northwest of the church, directly at the inlet of the Red Water , a stream that flows into the Ohm near Bürgeln .

history

The castle was first mentioned in 1358 when Landgrave Heinrich II of Hesse enfeoffed the Lords of Fleckenbühl with the bailiwick of Bürgeln. In 1376 the lords of Fleckenbühl, probably the builders of the castle, gave it to the landgrave as a fief . One branch of the family later called itself "von Fleckenbühl, called Bürgeln". The owners of the castle later changed several times. When it was abandoned is not known, but probably before 1726, as it was not mentioned again afterwards. The castle was demolished for the extraction of building materials. The trenches were filled. Instead of the castle, a manor was built in which the remains of the walls of the former castle have been built.
