The Oberburg in Fronhausen is an original moated castle on Rathausstrasse in the municipality of Fronhausen in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district in Hesse .

history

From 1159 Fronhausen is attested as the center of an immunity of the imperial monastery Essen , whose Fronhof was presumably above the upper castle. The bailiff appointed by the monastery had his seat on the upper castle, which was built at the end of the 13th century. In 1367 the lower castle was built by Craft Vogt von Fronhausen as a Hessian fief after the estate was divided . In the Thirty Years' War the upper castle burned down in part. It was used as a brewery from 1692 . In 1851 the upper castle came to an innkeeper and began to deteriorate. It later came back into the possession of the Schweinsberg taverns and is now privately owned again.

description

From the originally small moated castle, the late medieval stone building, expanded into a residential house in 1974, has been preserved. Work on the castle is attested from the 14th century, the foundations are probably older. Traces of the terrain still indicate a former ring wall system surrounding the castle .
