The courtyards are a former spur castle south of Dreihausen , a district of the municipality Ebsdorfergrund in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district in Hesse . Today only remnants of the facility are left.
location
The remains of the larger fortifications are located about 1.5 km south of the Dreihausen district and west of the Roßberg district at a formerly important transition between the Ebsdorfer Grund and the Lahn valley on a high plateau that slopes slightly from west to east .
description
The facility extends over an area of around two hectares , consisting of a lower (1.25 ha) and an upper castle (0.75 ha). The entire facility is surrounded by a curtain wall. It is limited to the north and east by steep slopes. To the west and south it was protected by a ditch in front of it . The original access was through a gate in the northern curtain wall. The upper castle could be entered through the lower castle.
The remains of several buildings were found in the upper castle. These include a stone house measuring 9.8 by 4.8 m as well as a round church with a diameter of about six meters and a north apse . Elaborate painting and the discovery of a small piece of porphyry and green marble from Laconia suggest that the residents must have been a small group of privileged people.
Geophysical measurements revealed that the plateau was built outside of the ring wall.
history
The Höfe castle was probably built during the Carolingian rule in the 8th / 9th centuries. Century built. Several ceramic finds indicate that the castle was settled during this period. It is unclear whether it was a royal palace .
Royal property was preserved around Ebsdorf. The Höfe Castle probably belonged to this. It is possible that it is related to three documented stays of King Heinrich IV in Ebsdorf (1054, 1057, 1066).
The castle largely fell apart. The lower castle was partially destroyed by the construction of a timber removal path.
