Sign: 590 m above sea level NN  - headwaters of the Dietzhölze (2015)
Upper Dietzhölze-Weiher (June 2015)

The Dietzhölze rises in the southwest of the Rothaargebirge on the northwest slope of 641.1  m above sea level. NHN high Nordhöll , which belongs to the northeastern outlet of the Haincher Höhe . Its source is located in a small headwaters at around 590  m above sea level.

Initially, the Dietzhölze flows around the Nordhöll in a clockwise direction in a roughly horseshoe shape. The Obere Dietzhölze-Weiher , at the forester's house Dietzhölze , and the Lower Dietzhölze-Weiher 1.9 kilometers below it are fed. According to this, the Langenbach joins from the west near Landesstrasse  1571, northwest above the Dietzhölztal district of Rittershausen . From there the Dietzhölze flows to Ewersbach , the seat of the Dietzhölztal municipal administration, to the southeast; The Ebersbach flows into the village from the southeast. From now on it runs a little along the L 3044.

After passing Ewersbach, the Dietzhölze flows from the north to the Mandelbach coming from the Mandeln district , whereupon it runs south along the L 3043. It flows between the Steinbrücken district and its location in Ziegenberg .

Shortly afterwards, the Dietzhölze reaches the municipality of Eschenburg . In von Eibelshausen , the seat of the municipal administration, the Dombach flows in from the northwest and the Simmersbach coming from the Simmersbach district to the south of the village from about the same direction . Immediately after its confluence, the river crosses under the federal highway 253 , which was previously laid along the Simmersbach , in order to flow in a south-west direction along the road, touching the Eschenburg district of Wissenbach and the Dillenburg district of Frohnhausen .

Finally, the Dietzhölze reaches the northwest part of the core town of Dillenburg, where immediately after crossing under the B 277 it flows a few meters east of the junction of the B 253 and ultimately flowing in from the north into the Lahn tributary Dill, which comes from there from the west-northwest .

Natural allocation

Dietzhölze is of outstanding importance in terms of natural space. The Dietzhölzetal , which also contains the almonds and Simmersbach valleys, is an extension of the Dill valley (main unit 321) and occupies the greater part of the upper Dill valley (321.1). The main unit Dilltal as such represents the interface between the Rothaargebirge (main unit 333, north and northwest), the Gladenbacher Bergland (main unit 320, east) and the Westerwald (main units 322-324, southwest). While the Rothaargebirge is the center of gravity of the southern mountains ( Main unit group 33), Dilltal and Gladenbacher Bergland - as well as the "actual" Westerwald - are included in the main unit group Westerwald (32).

In the absolute upper reaches, after only 3 km to just below Rittershausen, the Dietzhölze rothaargebirge inside represents the border between Haincher Höhe (right or southwest) and Ederkopf-Lahnkopf-ridge (left). Immediately below the mentioned section, the river again represents the north - and the eastern border of the Struth ridge , which is bounded to the south by the Dill and to the west by its tributary Roßbach . The Struth (natural area 321.2) looks like an extension of the Haincher Höhe, but is part of the main unit of Dilltal and therefore part of the natural Westerwald.

Catchment area and tributaries

The catchment area of the Dietzhölze is 88.44  km² and is drained to the North Sea via Dill, Lahn and Rhine .

On the main flow issue

At the confluence with the Dill, the Dietzhölze is a little longer than its mother river, but has a significantly smaller catchment area (88 compared to 162 km²) and accordingly contributes less to the runoff (1400 compared to 2900 l / s). If, however, the right tributaries Haigerbach and Aubach coming from the Westerwald are subtracted from the Upper Dill to the mouth , the values of the Dill are reduced to 79 km² catchment area and 1,300 l / s discharge. Thus, the Dietzhölze represents the second main river of the Dill system with at least equal rights in relation to the Rothaargebirge and Struth.

Lahn-Sieg and Lahn-Dill watersheds

Only 2 km north of the Dietzhölzequelle, the Lahn - Sieg and Lahn - Dill watersheds meet on the Jagdberg . Immediately to the north is the source of the Ilse , to the west that of the Lahn itself and to the east that of the Banfe - all draining to the upper Lahn. In the western neighborhood of the Dietzhölzequelle, however, the Geiersgrundbach rises, which drains through the Werthenbach to the Sieg.
