Jermaine Paul (born July 26, 1978 in New York ) is an American R&B musician. He won the second season of the US talent show The Voice in 2012 .

biography

Paul grew up as the son of a church minister - except for two years in Alabama - in New York and began with music in church. He has sung in various choirs, including his high school classical school choir and a choir with members from all over New York State . He also learned to play the guitar and later the piano. At the age of 15 he founded the band 1Accord with a brother and his friend , which also got a record deal, but broke up after a movie song.

After that he was a background and studio singer for Alicia Keys for a long time and had his own appearances in her opening act for a while. In 2006 he was nominated for a Grammy Award for best R&B performance together for participating in her song If This World Were Mine . Nonetheless, after eight years, he split from Keys because he wanted to start an independent career. With brothers and friends, he formed a band that established itself in New York.

When the singing talent show American Idol was launched in 2002, Jermaine Paul applied as a candidate but was rejected. He made a second attempt in 2012 with the competing format The Voice . Although only two of the four coaches voted for him at the blind auditions , he made it to the final and prevailed there against the remaining three competitors. With his final entry I Believe I Can Fly , originally by R. Kelly , he made it into the US singles charts . In addition to the prize money, he also received a recording contract. However, he did not release an album of his own after his first single, I Believe in This Life, flopped despite appearing on the subsequent The Voice season.
