Amel Larrieux (born March 8, 1973 in Philadelphia ) is an American pop, hip-hop and rhythm & blues singer and singer-songwriter.

life and career

Larrieux grew up in Greenwich Village . Her mother Brenda Dixon Gottschild was a professor and dance critic. She attended the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (fellow students included Christian McBride , members of Boyz II Men , Joey DeFrancesco , Questlove and Kurt Rosenwinkel ).

In 1991 she met producer Bryce Wilson , with whom she founded the pop / R & B duo Groove Theory . With Tell Me from the debut album Groove Theory (Epic Records) they had a big hit in 1995. Larrieux but left Groove Theory and pursued a solo career. In 1999 her debut single Get Up was released . In 2000 her solo album Infinite Possibilities was released on Epic Records. Soon after, she left the label and founded her own label BlissLife Records with her husband Laru Larrieux . Her album Bravebird was released there in 2004 and Morning in 2006 . An album with jazz standards, Lovely Standards, followed in 2007 .

In 1996 she sang on the album Sweetback by members of the band of Sade Adu ( Sweetback ). In 2002 she recorded the album What´s come over me? With singer Glenn Lewis . and both sang on the Grammy -nominated album 1.2 to the Bass by Stanley Clarke ( Where is the love ).

In 2010 Groove Theory reunited with Bryan Wilson in Japan. In 2013 she sang at the Blue Note Jazz Festival .

She is married and has two daughters.
