Sweetback

Sweetback is a British band. It consists of three members of Sade's band ; Stuart Matthewman (guitar, saxophone), Paul Spencer Denman (bass) and Andrew Hale (keyboards).

Career

Sweetback was founded as a side project when Sade Adu took a break of several years after the Love Deluxe tour in 1994. The band members lived in different places at the time: Matthewman in New York City , where he ran a music studio and produced under the name Cottonbelly, Hale in London and Denman in Los Angeles . The songs for their debut album were developed together and various working versions were exchanged as digital audio tape . It was released in October 1996 under the title Sweetback on Epic Records , the singles You Will Rise and Au Natural were released . In June 2004 the second album Stage 2 was released, the singles from it were Lover and Things You'll Never Know .

The band members described their style of music as "Global Soul Music"; reviewers see it as a mixture of ambient , trip-hop , soul and jazz . The albums include instrumental and vocal pieces for which various guest singers have been hired. Amel Larrieux , Bahamadia , Maxwell and Leroy Osbourne sing on the first album, Aya and Chocolate Genius on the second album.
