Eric Saarinen (born June 26, 1942 ) is an American cameraman .

Live and act

The son of the famous Finnish architect Eero Saarinen and the sculptor Lilian Swann Saarinen received training in painting and graphic design. At UCLA , Saarinen was trained in all cinematographic issues. During this time, on June 5, 1968, he witnessed the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles with the camera running . These pictures went around the world. Saarinen graduated in 1969 and switched to cinema at the end of the same year.

Even his first job as a simple cameraman led him to one of the most legendary documentaries in pop rock history: On December 6, 1969, Saarinen filmed the Rolling Stones with a number of colleagues for the film Gimme Shelter during a concert on Altamont Speedway . Saarinen had chaotic memories of the organizational processes: "If everything was perfect at Woodstock, Altamont was the upsidedown underbelly of nature." Saarinen also captured the killing of drugged adolescent Meredith Hunter during the concert on camera.

In the following years Saarinen worked sometimes as a simple cameraman, sometimes as a chief cameraman. He also photographed documentaries and feature films. These were mostly cheap productions made fast with the charm of the primitive, which were often characterized by a high speed. Probably the best-known feature film work in Saarinen's short film career was Wes Craven's 1977 horror film Hill of Bloody Eyes . In the same year, the soulful singer-melodrama Star of my Life was written . Other well-known works by Saarinen are the first three productions by comedian and director Albert Brooks .

In the mid-1980s, Saarinen turned away from Hollywood and fiction and towards advertising. There he worked as a director and as a cameraman. Saarinen later became a partner at Plum Productions in Santa Monica . In this role, he oversaw advertising campaigns for brands such as Chevrolet , Nissan , Jeep Eagle , Fiat , Levi's and Reebok .

His sister Susan Saarinen (* 1945) chose her father's and grandfather's profession and works as an architect.
