Upside Down in America (Original title: Lost in America ) is an American comedy film from 1985 , which was directed by Albert Brooks . He and his co-writer Monica Johnson wrote the script.

action

David and Linda Howard are typical yuppies of the 1980s. You live in Los Angeles and are bored with your life. When David freaks out about being transferred to New York City , the boss dismisses him without further ado. David tells his wife to quit and go on adventures with him.

The Howards sell their house, withdraw their money and bid farewell to society. They want to explore the country like in Easy Rider . They set off with a Winnebago motorhome. When Linda at Roulette in the Desert Inn - Casino in Las Vegas all the money skin on the head, the couple is broke.

The couple ended up burned down in Safford, Arizona . David eventually takes on the job of a student guide. Here he is teased by the students. Linda works at Der Wienerschnitzel in a badly paid job where her boss is half her age. After they have found accommodation in a trailer park , they both realize that this does not correspond to their dream of freedom. They go to New York, where David begs to get his old job back.

Criticism and Awards

Lost In America has a 96% positive rate on Rotten Tomatoes , based on 25 reviews. The script won an award from the National Society of Film Critics .

"The comedy, which is based on a funny basic idea, hardly uses the potential of the story to deal with cinema myths and ends the odyssey of its heroes before it has really started."

The Bravo channel voted the film at number 80 of the 100 best comedies of all time.

The American Film Institute voted the film 84th of the 100 Best American Comedies of All Time.
