biography

Bahamadia started out as a DJ in her hometown of Philadelphia, where she also tried her hand at MC at times. On one such occasion she was discovered by producer DJ Ran, who helped her to her first single Funk Vibe in 1993 . The single made Guru , the MC of the hip-hop duo Gang Starr, aware of Bahamadia and helped her to get a contract with the record label Chrysalis. There the singles Total Wreck (1994) and Uknowhowwedu (1995) were released, which were praised for their relaxed raps and their jazzy appeal and were well received in the scene. The first LP collage was released in 1996 and was co-produced by Guru , DJ Premier and The Roots .

Because of the impending bankruptcy of Chrysalis, Bahamadia waited for the contract to expire and appeared as a guest on various projects, which strengthened her reputation in the scene. Among others, Push Up Ya Lighter with The Roots , New Forms with Roni Size , Good Girl Down with Morcheeba , Chaos with Reflection Eternal and collaborations with Sweetback , Towa Tei , Brand New Heavies , Herbalizer , Planet Asia , Jedi Mind Tricks and Army of the Pharaohs and Jazzmatazz .

In 2000 the EP BB Queen (BB for beautiful black) was released under its own name. The next longer album was released in 2006 with the name Good Rap Music .

Bahamadia presented a hip-hop radio show in Philadelphia from 1997-1999. She represents the trend of globalization in hip-hop culture and thanks, for example, the hip-hop communities in Japan, Canada, Sweden, Thailand and other countries in the text of Global (with the Sisters of the Underground from 2003) .
