Towa Tei ( Japanese テ イ ・ ト ウ ワ , Tei Towa for Sinocorean 鄭東 和 , Chung Dong-hwa ; * on September 7, 1964 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese DJ .

Career

Tei first became known to a wider public in 1989 with the production of the album Done by the Forces of Nature by the New York hip-hop trio Jungle Brothers .

The following year he became an international star as a member of the New York underground trio Deee-Lite . The debut single Groove Is in the Heart conquered the charts worldwide and is now considered a classic. After two albums, Towa Tei left the band and began working on solo projects.

His debut album Future Listening! was released in 1995 and is a mixture of electronic dance music with bossa nova and jazz elements . It ranks 59th on Rolling Stone Japan's "100 Greatest Japanese Rock Albums of All Time" . Three more albums followed in 1998, 1999 and 2004.
