Shalamar
Shalamar is an American disco and soul band that enjoyed worldwide success for over ten years, having at least one hit in the UK charts every year from 1977 to 1986 .
Band history
Shalamar was originally a studio project of the American manager Dick Griffey and British R & B - producer Simon Soussan. Griffey worked in 1977 for the television show Soul Train , which has offered a podium almost exclusively to African-American artists since 1971 and was still on the air in 2006.
Griffey recorded a medley of Motown hits with studio musicians , which was released under the title Uptown Festival and the band name Shalamar. After the single became a hit in the discos and also entered the charts, Griffey decided to fill the band name with life. Through Soul Train he found Jody Watley , Jeffrey Daniel and Gerald Brown, who were dancers on the show. Brown was quickly replaced by Howard Hewett . These three singers then came to be known as Shalamar.
At the end of 1978 the era of her dance- soul hits began with the song Take That to the Bank . A year later the first top ten hit followed with The Second Time Around , which also became a million seller. In the early 1980s Shalamar became stars of the American and British R&B and disco scenes.
Watley and Daniel left the band in 1983 because their record company Solar Records wanted to give them a rockier sound. Howard Hewett replaced both with Micki Free and Delissa Davis, which initially did not affect the success. The reformed Shalamar re-entered the US top twenty in 1984 with Dancing in the Sheets , which was used in the movie Footloose . Another track from Heartbreak album , Don't Get Stopped in Beverly Hills , was used in the movie Beverly Hills Cop and earned Hewett and Free a Grammy for writers .
1986 Howard Hewett left the band to begin a solo career; he was replaced by ex- football player Sydney Justin .
The group eventually broke up after the release of Wake Up in 1990. Jeffrey Daniel's only solo success was in 1991 with the album of the same name and the single She's That Girl . The most successful former Shalamar member was Jody Watley.
In 2005, Hewett and Daniel got back together and recruited Carolyn Griffey, the daughter of Shalamar inventor Dick Griffey and singer Carrie Lucas . The three took part in the UK television show Hit Me Baby One More Time , in which the audience rated which former star should win a new recording contract. Shalamar lost to Shakin 'Stevens , but stayed together and have since appeared again as Shalamar in clubs or otherwise giving concerts.
