Jody Watley (* the thirtieth January 1959 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American R & B - singer .

Life

Watley is the first African American woman to play the role of Betty Rizzo in the Broadway musical Grease .

Her career began as a dancer in the American television program Soul Train . There she was discovered by the manager Dick Griffey, who with her and two other soul train dancers, Jeffrey Daniel and Gerald Brown , formed the group Shalamar in 1977 , to which she belonged until 1984.

After leaving the group, she turned to a solo career, in which she was awarded a Grammy in 1987 in the Best New Artist category.

She is the goddaughter of the singer Jackie Wilson and the sister of the porn actress Midori . In 1999 she posed for Playboy . By 1995, Jody Watley was married to André Cymone (former member of the first cast of Prince ). The marriage resulted in two daughters (Lauren and Arie).
