Hard to Say I'm Sorry is a 1982 song by the American jazz rock band Chicago . It was written and produced by Peter Cetera and David Foster and appeared on the Chicago 16 album .

history

The song as well as the album represent a deviation from the previous musical style of Chicago, which until then were known for their calm rock music with wind instruments . In order to adapt to the style of rock music of the 1980s, synthesizers and heavily distorted electric guitars were increasingly used , as was common with many of the rock hits of the time. In the album version, the song contains a transition to the more jazz-heavy Get Away . Most radio stations play the song without a transition, sometimes in the United States the song is played with the track Get Away attached.

It was also unusual that Chicago largely renounced its band members and resorted to studio musicians for the recording of the single. David Foster played the piano by the American rock band Toto played Steve Lukather guitar, David Paich and Steve Porcaro took over the synthesizer and backing vocals comes from Bill Champlin .

The song deals with a couple's pre-breakup situation in which someone asks the other to forgive them.

The publication took place on May 25, 1982. The rock ballad became a number one hit in the United States, Canada, Ireland, Italy and Switzerland.

Music video

The music video was shot in Greece. In the plot, Chicago are accompanied by a few studio musicians. In the video version with the extension to the track Get Away you can also see fireworks around a ferris wheel.
