Guy Clark
Guy Clark (born November 6, 1941 in Monahans , Texas , † May 17, 2016 in Nashville , Tennessee ) was an American country musician and singer-songwriter.
Life
Clark's early musical influences were Mexican songs he heard in West Texas.
He became known as a songwriter when Jerry Jeff Walker recorded his songs LA Freeway and Desperados Waiting For a Train . Artists like Johnny Cash , Vince Gill , Ricky Skaggs , Steve Wariner and Rodney Crowell also recorded songs from Clark's pen. Emmylou Harris accompanied Clark on several recordings, including Clark's own version of Desperados Waiting For a Train on his first album Old No 1 from 1975.
Clark is known for his “story songs”, in which he tells stories like a modern troubadour that he or others have experienced. He identified Townes Van Zandt as one of his main influences . He had a long friendship with the musician. After Van Zandt's death in 1997, Clark recorded a song by his friend on almost every album. In 1995 he recorded a live album with Van Zandt and Steve Earle , Together at the Bluebird Cafe , which was only released in October 2001. Another live album from Clark is Keepers .
Clark helped mentor musicians like Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell. So he got Earle his first job as a songwriter in Nashville . In the 1970s, Clark and his wife Susanna's home in Nashville was open to musicians and songwriters, which is documented in the film Heartworn Highways . Susanna Clark, who wrote songs herself and designed albums for Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris as a graphic artist , died on June 27, 2012 at the age of 73.
Guy Clark was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004 . He has also been nominated for a Grammy Award several times . For his album My Favorite Picture of You , he received the award for the best folk album of the year at the Grammy Awards 2014 .
In addition to his musician career, Clark worked as a guitar maker .
