A guitar maker is involved in the manufacture and repair of guitars and other plucked instruments .

education

The plucked instrument maker is often referred to as a guitar maker; this term does not adequately cover the diversity of this apprenticeship . During the training, the basics of all plucked string instruments such as zither , dulcimer , harp , guitar , mandolin , ukulele , theorbo , lute , etc. are taught. There is a strong specialization in the companies; the individual company or craftsman usually only produces one or two of the possible instruments.

After the training, there is often a specialization in the areas of concert guitars , flamenco guitars , steel strings or western guitars , jazz guitars , electric guitars , electric basses or acoustic basses.

In Germany, around 8 to 10 trainees start this craft every year.

The instrument making school in Mittenwald , the state vocational and technical school for violin making and plucked instrument makers in Mittenwald offers four training positions per year, and the Vogtland vocational school center offers 4–6 more positions per year ; Part of the vocational and vocational school “Vogtland Musical Instrument Making” in Klingenthal .

At these schools, vocational training for apprentices from the companies takes place in block classes.

In addition, the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences Zwickau in Markneukirchen offers the course in instrument making.

One of the most famous guitar building teachers is the former teacher for instrument making and school councilor Franz Jahnel. He was born on April 7, 1892 in Görkau, North Bohemia, and died on March 29, 1992. He was best known for his book The Guitar and its Construction , published in 1963 by Das Musikinstrument Verlag .
