from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An old letter is a letter from the time before the introduction of postage stamps.

Chronological order

Old letter

Old letters in the broader sense emerged from the beginning of the transmission of written messages. Old letters in the narrower sense are the documents that have been transmitted through a regular postal system . The end of the era of old letters is to be set in the respective countries with the introduction of the postage stamp, i.e. initially in Great Britain in 1840 .

example

Old letter from October 24, 1835 from Wittingen to Ebstorf. The postage for the letter of the first weight level (3/4 Loth ) for the distance progression of up to 6 miles (approx. 45 km) was a good penny and was prepaid (see note below left fr. 1 ). The number 30 at the top right is the mapping number under which the letter from the Royal Hanoverian Post Holder in Wittingen was entered on the so-called letter card.
