Monahans is the district capital and county seat of Ward County in the US state of Texas in the United States . A very small part of the city belongs to neighboring Winkler County .

The city is located at the junction of Interstate 20 with Farm Road 18, about 55 km southwest of Odessa , in west Texas, about 40 km southeast of the southeastern corner of New Mexico and has a total area of 64.3 km² with no significant water surface.

According to the 2000 census, 6,821 people lived here in 2,496 households and 1,837 families. The population density was 106.2 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 79.30% White, 5.16% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 12.51% other ethnic groups. About 2.29% were mixed race and 43.66% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,496 households, 38.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.4% of these were married couples living together. 13.5% were single mothers and 26.4% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were single households and there were people living in 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.19.
30.3% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.2% 18 to 24, 25.7% 25 to 44, 21.5% 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 93.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 89.4 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 30,349 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,726. Males had a median income of $ 31,307 versus $ 18,086 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,100. 16.5% of the population and 14.7% of families are below the poverty line. 17.1% of these were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 18.1% were 65 or older.
