Anthony Michael "Tony" Lazzeri (born December 6, 1903 in San Francisco , California , † August 6, 1946 ibid) was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball . His nickname was Poosh .

biography

Tony Lazzeri was a member of Murderers Row , the championship team of the New York Yankees in 1927. The second baseman won the World Series five times with his Yankees , seven times he beat more than 100 RBIs and had 5 seasons with at least 18 home runs. Despite being overshadowed by Yankees legends like Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth , he was the first Italian-American superstar in baseball.

After six titles in the American League and five successes in the World Series, he left the Yankees after the 1937 season and moved to the Chicago Cubs in the National League . With the Cubs, he won the National League title, but lost to the Yankees in the World Series 4-0. In 1939 he played with the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants .

Lazzeri had his best day as a player on May 24, 1936. On that day he was the first to hit two Grand Slam home runs in one day and set a record for the American League that is still valid today with 11 RBIs in one game.

He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991, 45 years after his death .
