Sierra Dawn Hull (born September 27, 1991 in Byrdstown , Tennessee ) is an American bluegrass musician who began her career as a " child prodigy ". Her main instrument is the mandolin , but she also plays the guitar and sings .

Musical career

Hull grew up in a musical family in Pickett County , rural Tennessee, and was given a mandolin by her grandmother when she was eight. A year later the guitar was added. She played with her family and began participating in local music competitions in 2001. She met Ron Block from Alison Krauss ' band Union Station at a festival and introduced her to Krauss, who invited her to take part in a performance by the band at the Grand Ole Opry .

After releasing her first CD Angel Mountain as an independent production, she signed with Rounder Records in 2002 at the age of 13 . At 14, she also began singing and touring with her band Highway 111. The band consists of her brother Cody Hull (guitar), Cory Walker ( banjo / dobro ) and John Fox ( bass ). Her second album, Secrets , was released by Rounder in 2008, produced by Alison Krauss and Ron Block. Dan Tyminski , Barry Bales and Jerry Douglas from Union Station play on this album , as well as other well-known bluegrass musicians such as Tony Rice .

In 2009 she received a Presidential Scholarship from the Berklee College of Music .
