action

The series tells the story of five young interns at the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital in Seattle . The focus is on the young doctor Meredith Gray, who is initially completing her training in surgery together with her colleagues Cristina Yang, Isobel "Izzie" Stevens, George O'Malley and Alex Karev . At the heart of the plot are the various relationships between the interns and with their senior physicians.

season 1

Meredith Gray completed her medical degree in Boston and moved from there to Seattle to take her first position as an intern at Seattle Grace Hospital and also to be closer to her Alzheimer's mother, a famous surgeon. On the morning of her start, she wakes up next to a man she only knows as Derek and whom she met the night before in the bar across from the hospital. When she later meets him in the hospital, it turns out that Derek is the head of neurosurgery , who has also just moved to Seattle. Meredith, along with Cristina Yang, Izzie Stevens, George O'Malley and Alex Karev, will be the department physician Dr. Miranda Bailey assigned to training. Derek Shepherd tries to make the relationship with Meredith more lasting. However, she initially fends off his attempts because Shepherd is also her superior and she actually wants to keep private and business matters separate. However, she gradually gives up her resistance and falls in love with the attractive neurosurgeon.

In the first episode , George is met by cardiac surgeon Dr. Preston Burke selected to be the first of the new interns to assist in an operation, an appendectomy . In doing so, however, he almost causes the patient's death, so that Burke has to intervene to save the patient's life. Now it is called the "007 License to Kill". In a later episode, a party takes place at Grey's house, after which Meredith and Derek are caught by Miranda having sex in the car. This disapproves of the affair of a senior doctor with an assistant doctor. Cristina, who is very ambitious and very talented, but a bit hypothermic, begins a relationship with the senior doctor Preston. Soon she is pregnant by Preston , but does not want to carry the child to term, so she is preparing for an abortion . Since Cristina wants to keep the relationship between her and Preston on a low flame, Preston separates from her. As a result of this separation, she does not tell him about the pregnancy.

Gradually a close friendship develops between Cristina and Meredith, as both women are similar in that they allow little closeness. However, they can speak openly and familiarly with one another.

George fell in love with Meredith from the beginning of his training. This fact is not hidden from his colleagues, with the exception of Meredith herself. However, he cannot muster the courage to confess his love to her, especially since he himself had a brief love affair with a nurse. When George falls ill with syphilis , it is revealed that his girlfriend was previously in a relationship with Alex, who has a cool relationship with patients and colleagues and is considered an arrogant womanizer. He is nicknamed “Dr. Brood of Devils ”and is beaten by George after he learns that he is responsible for his syphilis infection. Little by little, Alex develops a not always easy relationship with Izzie, who financed her studies as a model for lingerie advertising . Izzie tends to take a lot of things personally and to develop too strong emotional bonds with her patients, which is why she gets into conflicts with her trainer and the senior physicians a few times.

Since Alex failed his practical test, the other interns learn with him what Izzie resents them. After cardiac patient Denny Duquette is hospitalized, Izzie falls in love and flirts with him. Personnel decisions

Isaiah Washington

Isaiah Washington said the at a press conference after the ceremony Golden Globe Awards 2007 on the homosexuality of TR Knight . Previously, Washington and Patrick Dempsey allegedly had an argument during filming , with the former commenting on a cast member other than Fagot ( fagot ). This other actor turned out to be TR Knight, who then made his sexual orientation public . In a public statement, Washington later regretted his "unfortunate choice of words". After discussion in the media and protests by the lesbian and gay movement in the USA, the production company deleted the character Preston Burke at the end of the third season of 2007 from the series.

In the 22nd episode of the tenth season, Washington made a guest appearance in 2014 in the wake of Sandra Oh's departure .

Kate Walsh

Kate Walsh's character Dr. Addison Forbes-Montgomery stepped out of the main cast after the third season ended in 2007. In the spin-off Private Practice , she continued the presentation of Dr. Montgomery, however, continued into 2013. In seasons four through eight, Walsh had guest appearances.

Brooke Smith

On November 3, 2008, it was announced that Brooke Smith , the Dr. Erica Hahn pictured who would leave the series with the episode aired on November 6, 2008. The series writer, Shonda Rhimes , said in an interview that the magic between characters couldn't be sustained over the long term. The depiction of a lesbian figure was not the cause.

TR Knight

On June 22, 2009 it was announced that TR Knight was released from his contract and thus the portrayal of his role George O'Malley will end after the 5th season. He justified his decision with the fact that his role in the series had gone under and that he had too little time to appear. Shonda Rhimes stated that this was due to the preparations for the finale, which aired in the US on May 14, 2009.

Katherine Heigl

After lengthy speculation, Katherine Heigl and ABC announced Heigl's exit in March 2010 and thus the end of their portrayal of Isobel "Izzie" Stevens with the season 6 episode broadcast on January 21, 2010.

Chyler Leigh

Shortly before the season eight finale, Shonda Rhimes announced in 2012 that a "beloved" member of the main cast would die in the final episode of season eight. When the episode aired, it was finally revealed that it was Chyler Leigh's character Alexandra "Lexie" Gray. Shonda Rhimes confirmed that it wasn't easy for her, but that both of them ultimately came to that decision together.

Kim Raver

Shonda Rhimes said in a 2012 interview that she had no more story to tell for Teddy Altman for now. For this reason, Kim Raver is ready to give her series character a "long-earned break" and leave the series for the time being. In June 2017, it was announced that Kim Raver would revisit the role of Teddy Altman in season 14. In May 2018 it was announced that Raver will be part of the main cast again from season 15.

Eric Dane

After it became known that Chyler Leigh and Kim Raver were leaving after the eighth season, Shonda Rhimes mentioned that other actors could possibly leave the series. In late July 2012, Eric Dane officially announced his departure from the series. The second episode of the ninth season was the last episode in which Dane was seen in his role. He stated that he was "indebted to everyone" and that he would now "pursue other commitments".

Sandra Oh

During the first rehearsal for the 200th episode of the series, Sandra Oh announced in 2013 that she would be leaving the series after the currently produced tenth season and the expiry of her contract. She said she "was thinking about her long-term future at Grey's Anatomy a year ago when it came to renewing her contract." Oh herself said that when she last renewed her contract, she gave herself two years to say goodbye to her star role. Even after a year she would not have changed her mind: " From a creative point of view, I gave the character everything (and lived through everything) and I am ready to let go ."

Gaius Charles and Tessa Ferrer

After the roles of Gaius Charles and Tessa Ferrer were expanded to lead roles with the start of the tenth season, it was announced in late March 2014 that the two actors will not return in the eleventh season of the series. However, Ferrer was temporarily back in her role as Dr. See Murphy.

Patrick Dempsey

Patrick Dempsey left the series in late April 2015 for the eleventh season. In a statement from ABC it was said that Dempsey is leaving Grey's Anatomy after eleven seasons [...] to devote himself to other interests.

Sara Ramirez

In May 2016, it was announced that Sara Ramirez would be leaving the series after the season 12 finale.

Jerrika Hinton

In early February 2017, it was announced that Jerrika Hinton would retire from the main cast of Grey's Anatomy after the then currently aired 13th season in favor of a leading role in the HBO drama series Here and Now .

Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew

In early March 2018, it was announced that the two long-time leading actresses Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew will leave the series after the 14th season. The decision was made by the producers.

Justin Chambers

In early January 2020 it was announced that longtime lead actor Justin Chambers will be leaving the series in the middle of the 16th season to concentrate on other projects.

Books

The book Grey's Anatomy: OP-Whispering / Bargeflüster is a reversible book by Stacy McKee, Chris VanDusen and Kerstin Winter. It tells the story of the interns from their first day through the eyes of the cynical ward nurse Debbie and the gay bar owner Joe. Both characters appear in the series. Grey's Anatomy: OP whispering / bar whispering came onto the German market in 2007, has 320 pages and is paperback .

Video games

In early 2009, Grey's Anatomy The Video-Game was released.

Series style

The most prominent stylistic device is the voiceover of one of the characters. This puts the action in a general context and reflects the character's thoughts. Usually this is the voice of Meredith Gray, exceptions are:

  • Episode 2.19, "Karma" (George)
  • Episode 2.26, "Fight or Flight" (all Grey's Anatomy main characters)
  • Episode 3.09, "Treason" (Cristina)
  • Episode 3.25, "Almost there" (Richard)
  • Episode 4.11, "The Healer" (Miranda)
  • Episode 4.17, "Freedom (2)" (no voiceover)
  • Episode 5.13, "Between Heaven and Hell" (Denny)
  • Episode 5.19, "Love letter in the elevator" (Alex)
  • Episode 5.22, "The most beautiful day in your life" (Izzie)
  • Episode 6.02, "40 Days (2)" (all Grey's Anatomy main characters)
  • Episode 6.07, "A Moment of Peace" (Derek)
  • Episode 6.13, "A Difficult Legacy" (Derek)
  • Episode 6.15, "Time Loop" (Richard)
  • Episode 6.18, "Dying is not easy" (Owen)
  • Episode 6.24, "Death and His Friends (2)" (Derek)
  • Episode 7.06, "Seattle Medical" (Cristina)
  • Episode 7.18, "The Song Behind the Song" (Callie)
  • Episode 8.04, "What makes men special?" (All male main characters)
  • Episode 9.05, "Big Steps" (Cristina, Meredith and Dr. Craig Thomas)
  • Episode 9.14, "Pegasus" (Alex)
  • Episode 9.21, "The Sleeping Monster" (Miranda)
  • Episode 10.01, "Questions of Fate" (Richard)

  • Episode 11.05, "Time Out" (Arizona and Callie)
  • Episode 11.11, "Torments of Hell" (April)
  • Episode 11.13, "The End Before Your Eyes" (Dr. Nicole Herman)
  • Episode 11.14, "Superheroes" (Amelia)
  • Episode 11.21 "A High Price" (Meredith and Derek)

  • Episode 13.09 "Doom and Doom" (Meredith, Amelia and Maggie)
  • Episode 13.12 "Interfering not wanted!" (Jo)
  • Episode 13.16 "Speechlessness" (Jackson)

The first supporting character whose voice can be heard off-screen is Denny Duquette, who is already dead at this point and only appears as the hallucination of Izzie in the series. So you could say that Izzy's thoughts are being reproduced.

In the episode “Seattle Medical”, Cristina's voiceover is an interview.

The episode "The Song Behind the Song" shows a special narrative style as a musical episode. Here songs such as the theme song of the series Cozy In The Rocket or the song Chasing Cars used in the season finale of the second season are built into the plot and interpreted by the protagonists.

In the episode “Big Steps”, calls between Cristina and Meredith are shown on a split screen . In addition, snapshots of your current, situation-related thoughts are spoken off-screen. Shortly after his death, Cristina remembers various statements made by her mentor Dr. Craig Thomas, which can be heard with his voice.

Reviews

  • “Maybe it helps that, despite all the talk of the target group, men are allowed to watch 'Grey's Anatomy'. Afterwards you can always deny to your girlfriend that you found it just as exciting to see who was hooking up with whom. Or that you even got goose bumps when they cut open a patient again and saved his life at the last minute with healthy tragedy, while Coldplay warbled meaningful ballads from the off. For this moment you just put the grumbling in order that the 'Grey's' episodes with pop music are originally named after the song titles, for example 'The First Cut is the Deepest'. ” - Peer Schader
  • “Pro7 prescribed youthful lightheartedness: Grey's Anatomy. The fact that the five thirtysomethings work as interns at Seattle Grace Hospital is ultimately irrelevant. It's about relationships, sex drive, and ambition, like any good soap opera; the patients provide the keywords for cool appearances in surgeon green. The series is 'Sex and the City' on the ward. Medicine not for sick, needy viewers, but as a hip career option for yuppies. ” - Katja Werner
  • “While the ER fan could do a tracheal incision blindly after 12 seasons, with 'Grey's Anatomy' you learn to ponder about life itself with the sometimes annoying voiceover of title hero Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo). Compared to her colleagues, like the wonderfully bitchy Asian nerd Cristina (Sandra Oh), the main character remains strangely inconspicuous and pale. ” - Sandra Fomferek
