Henry Gray (anatomist)
Henry Gray (* probably 1827 , † probably June 12, 1861 in London ) was an English anatomist , surgeon and author .
Life
Gray enrolled in 1845 as a student at St. Georges Hospital in London , where he later worked as a demonstrator and lecturer in anatomy. While still a student he was awarded a prize from the Royal College of Surgeons for his essay The Origin, Connexions and Distribution of nerves to the human eye and its appendages, illustrated by comparative dissections of the eye in other vertebrate animals . In 1852 he became a member of the Royal Society .
In 1858, the first edition of Gray's Anatomy was published , with more than 750 pages and more than 350 illustrations. The illustrations were made by Henry Vandyke Carter and contributed significantly to the success of the work. Over the decades, the book developed into one of the best-known standard works of medicine in the English-speaking world.
Gray died of smallpox in June 1861 . His grave is in London in Highgate Cemetery .
