Henry Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body , usually just called Gray's Anatomy , is a book about human anatomy . It is seen as a classic of the subject, especially in English-speaking countries. The first edition appeared in Great Britain in 1858 and a year later in the USA under the name Gray's Anatomy: Descriptive and Surgical . The author Henry Gray died after the 2nd edition. However, the work was continued under his name and was published in its 40th edition in September 2008.

The book

In the period from 1860 to 1880, seven editions were published in Great Britain. In 1878 the work split into a version for Great Britain and one for the USA. The first US version roughly corresponds to the 8th British version, which caused a lot of confusion, especially when it came to quotations.

The illustrations for the first editions were made by the anatomist Henry Vandyke Carter .

The current version is the 40th edition, which came out in September 2008. It was published by Churchill Livingstone (British version) and CV Mosby (US version). The differences in the two editions only relate to minor differences in the nomenclature , such as the use of adrenaline instead of epinephrine.

The current version is also available on CD-ROM.

A new textbook called Gray's Anatomy for Students was published in 2004. Although it bears the old name, it is a completely rewritten book as Gray's Anatomy has become, and less and less, a complete documentation of medical-anatomy knowledge over time could be used as a textbook. From the 35th edition, attention was increasingly paid to compressing the content. Nevertheless, the 38th edition still comprised 2092 large-format pages.

In 2007, Gray's Anatomie for Students was published as the first German edition of the book.
