Kimberly Elise Trammel (born April 17, 1967 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is an American actress .

Life

Elise studied film arts at Minneapolis Community College , then graduated from the University of Minnesota and studied at The American Film Institute . She played in the middle of 1990 years in television series such as In the House , and The Sentinel - In the eye of the hunter . She became known after she played one of the bigger roles in Jonathan Demme's film Menschenkind (1998) alongside Oprah Winfrey , Danny Glover and Thandie Newton . For this role she won the Golden Satellite Award and the Chicago Film Critics Association Award ; she was nominated for the Acapulco Black Film Festival Award and the Image Award . In the film John Q - Desperate Fury (2002) she played the wife of the title character John Quincy Archibald , who played Denzel Washington . For her role she was nominated for the Image Award and the Black Reel Award . In the thriller The Manchurian Candidate (2004) she played again alongside Denzel Washington; for her role she was nominated for the Black Reel Award . She won the Black Reel Award for the lead role in Woman Thou Art Loosed (2004) and was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award and the Image Award . She played the leading role in the film Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2005), for which she was nominated for the Image Award and the BET Comedy Award .

Elise was married to Maurice Oldham from 1989 to 2005 and has two daughters.
