Vincent R. Stewart (born April 6, 1958 in Kingston , Jamaica ) is an American officer in the United States Marine Corps with the rank of Lieutenant General . From January 23, 2015 to October 3, 2017, he was Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). He was the first African American to achieve this high position in the Marine Corps.

He retired on April 5, 2019.

Life

Stewart graduated from Kingston College and immigrated to the United States in the early 1970s . He studied history at Western Illinois University ; after graduating in 1981, he joined the United States Marine Corps .

Stewart graduated from The Basic School (TBS) at Quantico . After graduating in 1982, he attended the Armor Officer School at Fort Knox . He then served as a platoon leader in the 1st Tank Battalion out of Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms . In 1984 Stewart became Executive Officer of the Headquarters Company, 1st Tank Battalion.

At the Naval War College Stewart acquired in 1995 a master's degree in National Security and Strategic Studies , and in 2002 a degree in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces of the National Defense University .
