Grinderman was an Australian garage rock band consisting of Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Martin Casey and Jim Sclavunos. All band members also play at Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds . The debut album named after the band was released in Great Britain on March 5, 2007 and in the USA on April 10, 2007. In contrast to Bad Seeds, Nick Cave also plays guitar with Grinderman (with Bad Seeds he only did this in one piece, Rye whiskey ). Grinderman 2 was released in 2010, followed by the remix album Grinderman 2 RMX (2012). On December 10, 2011 Nick Cave announced the breakup of the band after a performance by Grinderman at the Australian Meredith Music Festival, but at the same time did not rule out a reunion in a few years.

Band history

Nick Cave at a solo concert, September 11th, Mainz

Following the recordings for the double album "Abattoir Blues / The Lyre Of Orpheus", Nick Cave wanted to play even faster and dirtier music with three of his Bad Seeds colleagues. Originally the band was supposed to be called Vortex , but there were already 18 other groups with the same name, which is why the choice fell on Grinderman . Nick Cave said in an interview: “The name just fit the band. It sums up what we do. We grind. ”In February 2006 the four musicians moved into the Metropolis Studios for their first demos. In March, the album was recorded within six days at RAK Studios, but overdubs and mixing were done again at Metropolis Studios.

At the same time, the Grinderman website was launched, where the band produces, among other things, a podcast in which a series of recording fragments gives an insight into the band's studio work.

The band's songs were not pre-composed, but were mainly created by Nick Caves playing the guitar, which the rest of the band got involved in. Cave, who works rather rustic on the guitar, achieved a rougher and harder sound of the music.

Critics praised the album for its aforementioned roughness and roughness, and it was often compared to Nick Cave's former band The Birthday Party .

On May 11, 2007 the band played the songs Honey Bee (Let's Fly to Mars) and No Pussy Blues in the BBC show "Later ... with Jools Holland" . Grinderman also played at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival in Somerset in May . The band also performed at the London Forum on June 20th . On July 23, 2007, the band first appeared on American television on the Late Show with David Letterman , where they played Honey Bee (Let's Fly to Mars) . A day later, Grinderman opened up for The White Stripes at Madison Square Garden . Nick Cave was also accompanied on his solo tour by his Grinderman bandmates and also played songs from this album there.
