Jasper Francis Cropsey (born February 18, 1823 in Rossville, on Staten Island near New York City , † April 23, 1900 ) was an American painter and architect .

life and work

Jasper Francis Cropsey, the eldest of eight children from rural parents, trained as an architect from the age of 14, initially trained himself in painting, then studied at the National Academy of Design from 1843 . Edward Maury was one of his teachers and he was on friendly terms with the philosopher Henry Philip Tappan , who was President of the University of Michigan from 1852 to 1863 . In 1845 he became a corresponding and in 1851 elected member of this academy. He made trips to Europe, including France, Italy ( Rome 1847–1849) and Switzerland. From 1856 he lived in London for seven years . There he was given the support of art critic John Ruskin and he had a personal encounter with Queen Victoria in 1861 . After his return to the United States, Cropsey opened a studio in New York and from then on devoted himself to landscape painting , developing a special affinity for autumnal landscapes. Jasper Francis Cropsey became one of the most important representatives of the Hudson River School . In 1893 he suffered a stroke and was then increasingly forgotten as a watercolor artist . His work was rediscovered in the USA from the 1960s.

His former home and studio, Ever Rest in Hastings-on-Hudson , Westchester County , contains much of Cropsey's work and now serves as a museum. Further works can be found in the National Gallery of Art , the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the Los Angeles County Museum of Art .
