The Fondation de l'Hermitage is a fine arts museum in Lausanne , in the canton of Vaud , in Switzerland . The museum is surrounded by the Parc de l'Hermitage .

history

The villa “l'Hermitage”, which is located on a hill above the city, was built between 1850 and 1853 for the Lausanne banker Charles-Juste Bugnion (1811–1897) on a plot of land that he had acquired in 1841. At the time, there were gardens on the site, as well as residential and farm buildings, including a pigsty, most of which Bugnion had removed. In accordance with a practice recommended at the time, the park was first laid out before construction of the main house began. However, a delay for financial reasons is also possible. The name of the garden architect has not been passed down with certainty; it may have been Frédéric Weger . The attribution of the design for the classical main building to the architect Louis Wenger also remains uncertain. If one can believe the portrayal of the painter François Bonnet in the painting Un bal à l'Hermitage (dated after 1853), the house soon after its completion became a popular venue for festivities for the Lausanne upper class.

museum

In 1976 the Bugnion family donated the house to the city. A foundation was set up with the aim of restoring, maintaining and promoting the building. It should hold two to three art exhibitions a year. The first exhibition in 1984 dealt with impressionism in collections in French-speaking Switzerland . Since then, over two million visitors have visited around 80 exhibitions. There were monographic exhibitions (for example on Bonnard , Baselitz , Giacometti , Hopper , Magritte , Miró , Monet , Borgeaud ), thematic exhibitions (on pointillism , futurism , English watercolors, Spanish painting of the late 19th century and modernism ), or loans from public (museums in Barcelona, Lyon, Athens, Montpellier) or private collections (Gould, Weinberg, Planque, Hahnloser , Bonna) were shown. One room is permanently dedicated to the Bugnion family. A bookstore complements the offer.

In addition to a modern extension wing, the basement houses the permanent exhibition of Chinese ceramics from the Vergottis Collection . It consists of around 400 objects from the 12th to 19th centuries and was compiled by Marie Vergottis, a collector and member of a Greek shipowner family.

The Fondation de l'Hermitage also has a collection of 600 works that are not on permanent display, but are regularly shown to the public as part of exhibitions or on loan to other museums. The building - KGS no. 6173 - and the collections - KGS no. 8698 - belong to the Swiss inventory of cultural goods of national and regional importance . The museum maintains a wealthy group of so-called patrons and friends whose names are regularly published. The current main patron is the food company Nestlé in Vevey .
